Tracing back the origin of environmental ceramics sculpture, we can see that they originated from creating drawings or engravings on cave walls for sorcery or ritual purposes and from the art of building and decorating homes. Some people think of environmental ceramics sculpture as subsequent elements of architecture, but considering the development of history from the prehistoric times, it shares a common origin with art. In other words, environmental ceramics sculpture do not only work as a part of architecture, but they are created as a symbolic work of art that explores and expresses human introversion. Symbolic functions are acts of organizing and signifying the experiences of human rituals and symbolic forms are the outcomes of symbolic functions, including myths, arts, languages, science, etc. The universal archetypal symbols of humankind convey mental and symbolic contents that are close to all men's a priori experiences. This symbolism of artistic structures enables us to make cultural communications through environmental ceramics sculpture.
Environmental ceramics sculpture today have complex characters to express place, public value, and artistic value, but the tendency to create environmental sculpture that perceive urban spaces as public spaces lead to the creation of uniform structures that lack understanding of the characteristics of surroundings and spaces, and even artistic value.
In this respect, this study pointed out the problem that environmental ceramics sculpture lack artistic value and examined the natural hearts of men that work in the deepest realm of spirit based on C. G. Jung's collective unconscious theory to rediscover the source of artistic value for environmental ceramics sculpture. Collective unconscious convey the accumulated spirits of men since the prehistoric times and is founded on the understanding of humankind. Thus, it is suitable for this study.
For the purpose of this study, the figurative principles of environmental ceramics sculpture were studied to decide that a study on the universal system of symbolism should be performed to understand the essence of figurative structures. Thus, various cases of environmental ceramics sculpture were analyzed based on two approaches:
First, cases were analyzed based on the results of a survey that applies Wolfflin's concept of figurative principles that consist of information on the public value, place, and artistic value of environmental ceramics sculpture, and general aesthetic values. Second, the spiritual value of environmental ceramics sculpture was analyzed based on C. G. Jung's collective unconscious theory, which is the basis of life that creates universal images for the humankind and related to the archetypal and symbolic images of collective unconscious, the realm of creative energies relating to the root of humankind.
In result, the unconscious activities based on the intuitive visual styles of environmental ceramics sculpture were revealed by the archetypal symbol of collective unconscious. This study opened the possibility to interpret the logic that superficial value and internal thesis are not unrelated to collective unconscious symbols and that they can create new semantics as art to be associated with and expand into other semantics. Also, it was useful for revealing their symbolism.
This study was significant because: first, it understood that they are no intensive study and analysis on finding the essential meaning of environmental ceramics sculpture and examined the roots of images and forms of figurative structures to approach the substantial existence of figurative structures.
Second, the archetypal and symbolic collective unconscious was analyzed through visual expressions of environmental ceramics sculpture to analyze how the universal archetypal symbols of human spirit are realized by environmental ceramics sculpture.
Third, its case studies would increase the possibility to create environmental ceramics sculpture that can work as creative installations and communicate with artists, visitors, and spaces.
This study would reveal that environmental ceramics sculpture provide modern people with physical and psychological spaces where they can experience new ego. Also, the archetypal system of symbolism that universally exists in the spirit of every man makes men feel that they are living in harmony with their regions, communities, and even the Universe. In other words, people instinctively react to the symbolic system of environmental ceramics sculpture that convey living energies and create the behaviors, determination, and cultural backgrounds of their communities.
