This research attempts to extract the factors that generate scientific interest, and survey paper of interest generating factors was developed, and verify the effect of extracted factors on the generation of scientific interest in the middle school students' observation activity on life phenomenon.
In order to extract interest generating factor, the observation activity program of 4 times was input towards the 3rd grade of middle school students, and the interview was conducted towards students who had strong scientific interest among students who participated in the observation activity. After classifying the interview results according to the types, and 21 interest generating factors were extracted. Interest generating factors were classified into 5; the characteristics of the observation object, the characteristics of the observation activity, the characteristics of the observation result, the characteristics of the observer, and the characteristics of the extrinsic factor.
The extracted results of this research are as followings:
In terms of features of observation objects, factors; life relation, newness, diversity, variability, and the degree of task difficulty were extracted. In terms of features of observation activity, factors; direct experience, instrument using, the manipulation of the observation object, communication activity, the recording method of observation results were extracted. The newness of the result, the differentiation from existing knowledge, and the clarity of result were extracted as the characteristics of observation results. The characteristics of observer; task-solving ability, preliminary knowledge, self-efficacy, need for cognition, and need for achievement were extracted. The characteristics of extrinsic factors; role appointment, evaluation, and compensation were extracted.
It was verified that interest generating factors have an effect on the generation of scientific interest in the observation activity. First of all, in order to confirm whether the extracted generation factors would have an effect on the generation of interest in observation activity, survey paper of interest generating factors was developed. The observation activity program of 2 times' volume that will be of interest(A task) and 2 times' volume that will not be of interest(B task) was applied towards the third grade of the middle school students. Then emotion record paper and task evaluation paper was input.
Analysis result of emotion record paper was confirmed that interested A task rather than B task, and result of task evaluation paper was confirmed that interest generating factor was more included A task rather than B task.
Also, survey paper of interest generating factor was input and it was confirmed that extracted interest generating factor has the significant effect on the generation of scientific interest.
The cause analysis on the uninteresting observation activity was possible, and it would play an essential role in developing the interesting observation activity. In addition, the result of this research can be applied to other exploration fields, and will be conducive to arousing the interest of students in biology study by helping the development of interesting program.
