The purpose of this thesis was to study the school records classification systems of Korea. To achieve this purpose, this study explored the unique characteristics of school organizations and school records, and the school records classification systems through literature review. To study the issues related to the school records classification systems and school records management, the researcher analyzed the results of the investigation which had been held by 'Daegu Metropolitan City Office of Education' and 'Office of Education Records Management'. The target of the investigation was 207 public elementary schools, 86 public middle schools, and 37 public high schools.
To study the current operation status of the school records classification sytems, the researcher analyzed the unit business records data which were registered on 'Electronic Documentary System' of 208 public elementary schools, 88 public middle schools, and 41 public high schools in Daegu.
The results of the analysis were as follows:
First, the school records classification systems did not reflect the unique characteristics of school organizations because of the fundamental and managerial problems of the school records classification systems.
Second, this is needed to manage the school records classification systems systematically.
To solve these problems, this study suggested the revised school records classification systems and the new directions for the efficient utilization of the school records classification systems.
Based on the BRM which is a functional governmental classification system, this study suggested that the school records classification system should be divided into three parts; 1) 'unique businesses of the agencies', 2) 'common businesses of the organizations', and 3) 'unique businesses of the organizations'.
The details of the suggested school records classification system could be summarized as follows:
1. For the items of 'common businesses of the agencies', the general preservation period rule could be applied to the items of 'General affairs businesses', 'Budgeting', 'Civil affairs administration', 'Security', 'Records management', 'Planning', and 'Inventories'.
2. The item of 'common businesses of the organizations' could be divided into three sub-parts: 'private information security', 'information opening to the public', and
'operation support'. Furthermore, under these three sub-parts, there should be the items of 'private information file maintenance', 'process information management',
'operation of information opening inquiry committee',
'businesses related to information opening inquiry by the public', and 'business alliance'.
3. Under the item of 'Education', two sub-items could be located. The two sub-items are 'General education' and 'School education'. In addition, under these two sub-items, there could be 5 Functions, 21 Activities, 45 Transaction, and 122 Unit businesses.
For the efficient operation of the school records management system, the followings are needed;
1) School members' persisting interests
2) Strict classification standard for the unit businesses
3) Proactive attitude of the school members
4) A continuing education for the school members
5) School records managers' knowledge about the school organizations and school records management system
6) Persisting interests of the institutions of 'National Archives' and 'Office of Education'.
