North Korean Child Defectors in South Korea are having psychological, emotional and social difficulties in adjusting themselves to the society, however, psychological intervention for North Korean Child Defectors' adjustment is inadequate in the real situation. Therefore, this study is targeting North Korean Child Defectors to conduct the group bibliotherapy program to understand how the group bibliotherapy program impacts with child's emotional intelligence and social skills.
Specified study issues of this study are as follows.
[Study issue 1] Are there any influences in North Korean Child Defector's emotional intelligence before·after the group bibliotherapy program?
[Study issue 2] Are there any influences in North Korean Child Defector's social skills before·after the group bibliotherapy?
[Study issue 3] How are the emotional intelligence and social skills of North Korean Child Defectors changed in progress of the group bibliotherapy program's each session?
In order to verify the study issues above, the group is consisted of seven North Korean Child Defectors who are belonging to the study group of welfare center in A-gu, Seoul, and they are settled in South Korea less than one year. The group bibliotherapy program is conducted a couple of times per week and seventy minutes per session for 17 sessions in total. As measurement tools of this study, emotional intelligence and social skills are used and conducted before and after. The result data is processed in impaired t-test statistics with SPSS 12.0 windows version. Moreover, additional test methods such as House-Tree-People drawing test and SCT(Sentence Completion Test) are conducted to compare before and after. During the process of the group bibliotherapy program, observation records and recorded video analysis of each session are compared, and this data is used to understand the changes of group members.
The results of this study shall be summarized as follows.
First, the group bibliotherapy program was influenced in overall emotional intelligence of North Korean Child Defectors and its sub factors such as emotion recognition, empathy, and emotion controlling. Moreover, the tracing test's before and after comparison results is showing that the level of emotional intelligence has been changed in the area of emotion recognition and emotion expression area.
Second, the group bibliotherapy program was influenced in overall social skills of North Korean Child Defectors and its sub factors such as cooperation, self-assertion, sympathy and self control. This represents a positive change of social skills influence. Moreover the before and after comparison test results of tracing test are showing that the social skill area has been changed.
Third, the group bibliotherapy program had positive influences in the improvement of both emotional intelligence and social skills of North Korean Child Defectors while processing each session. In the stage of relationship development, the North Korean Child Defectors were not showing interests, and they were distracted by more focusing on their own story than other people's stories. They started showing interests in other people after searching stage, and they were able to express their internal negative emotions and accept other people's emotions after passing emotion expression and perception. From this level, they were able to sit for long time, focus on books ,and this would eventually reduce the distraction. In the stage of social skills, distracted behaviors and tough talks were purified and other people' emotions were accepted and listened. They were expressing their feelings in language and for the parts that were not understood by themselves, they tried to control opinions and they were not showing negative actions on the situation.
As above, this study has positively influenced in the improvement of emotional intelligence and social skills by conducting the group bibliotherapy program to help the North Korean Child Defectors that psychological approaches have not been lacked.
Therefore, if the group bibliotherapy program is conducting to various age groups of the North Korean Child Defectors to intervene appropriately, it will be very beneficial to reduce maladjustment on South Korean society.
