Abstract
This study is to enhance our understanding on the experiences of supervisors in the social work field. In order to achieve this purpose, phenomenological approach was used as one of qualitative research methods. Research questions include, what are the essence of supervisors' experiences when supervising their undergraduate interns; how supervisors' overcome difficulties around supervising; what are the internal and external aspects that are required for an effective supervision.
Participants for this study were recruited from various social welfare sectors/organizations. The researcher used purposive sampling method and the participant selection criterion was more than two years of supervising experience. As a result, 8 supervisors in various social welfare fields including children, adolescents, elders, women, disabled, family, and a community service center participated in the study. Qualitative data were collected through an in-depth semi-structured interview followed by several telephone interviews as member-checking.
Data were analyzed using an integrated phenominologycal data analysis method of Colaizzi(1978) and Giorgi(1970). The analysis process include: first, summarizing the contents of interview by reading transcripts line by line and selecting meaningful chunks of statements; second, extracting themes in the interview by naming the essence of participants' experiences using participants' own language; third, organizing main themes by analyzing the relationships between themes; lastly, describing the essence of participants' experiences by telling their story.
As the result of this study, the essence of supervisors' experiences include the following themes: encountering, pupilizing, feeling satisfaction and worth, feeling vitality, transforming from a caterpillar to a butterfly, enhancing professional identity, searching potential employee, feeling difficult and heavy, feeling hardships and sorry, lastly, feeling pressured as a role model. Practice implications are included.
