This study is mainly focused on the effect of experiencing disabilities through art activities or young children's awareness and attitude toward disabilities and, on this basis, we put the study aim on showing basic material which can help the teachers to do disabilities understanding education in the young children education field.
To accomplish this study, we established the following two study questions.
First, does the experiencing disabilities through art activities influence common young children's awareness toward disabilities?
Second, does the experiencing disabilities through art activities influence common young children's acceptant attitude toward disabilities?
This study had two objects ; the experiment group which had forty young children going to M and V Kindergarten and the control group going to B and Y Kindergarten located in Daejeon.
To measure the change young children's awareness and attitude toward disabilities in the experiment group, we used these tools such as 「the open written questions and answers for understanding common young children's attitude toward disabilities」 and 「the written questions and answers about common young children's acceptant attitude」.
We conducted the experiment of experiencing disabilities through art activities ten times once a week.
We made prior and post examination for investigating the difference of young children's attitude before and after the experiment and did t-test comparing with the control group.
Results of this study suggest that First, the experiencing disabilities through art activities had a positive effect on the change in common young children's awareness of the disability. After experiencing disabilities through art activities, young children came to have the interest in disabilities, the change of the awareness to disable friend's ability and feel considerate of disabilities in others' positions.
Second, we can see that there was no definitely meaningful difference in the acceptant attitude to disabilities statistically, but, in case of experiment group, we can see every item average increased differently from the control group. This shows the activity has an only little effect on the young children.
In conclusion, this study showed the experiencing disabilities through art activities had an effect in changing young children's awareness toward disabilities. Therefore, we will be able to apply the experiencing disabilities through art disabilities as the effective disabilities understanding activity for improving the awareness toward disabilities.
