The purpose of this study was to find out the effects of mathematics learning base on self-determination learning model of instruction on the mathematics achievement and self-determination abilities for students with intellectual disabilities in a special class. The study subjects were 3 students with intellectual disabilities who were in a special class of B elementary school in Incheon. Their Intelligence Quotient was below and over 50, their Social Maturity(SQ) was average 60.8 and their counting abilities was the level of 5 year-old children according to the KEDI-Individual Basic Learning skills test results.
As an intervention tool, Self-Determination Learning Model of Instruction(Wehmeyer et al., 2000) which was restructured and modified according to the study subjects was used. The intervention phases applying 'Self-Determination Learning Mode of Instruction' were goal setting(phase1), task performance(phase2), the review of the goal attainment(phase3) and the maintenance and modification of the goal(phase4) and the questions were simplified in order that students with intellectual disabilities could easily understand.
To find out the effects of the intervention on 'mathematics achievement', the formative evaluation was performed in the phase 3 of every intervention and when the score was more than 70 for 2 consecutive sessions, progress evaluation was performed before the start of the next session. Thus, to verify the functional relationship between the data collected through 'Mathematics Progress Evaluation' and the intervention of 'Self-determination Learning Model of Instruction', 'multiple probe design across subject' was designed.
To find out the effects of the intervention on 'self-determination abilities', the questionnaire of 'self-determination ability', which Kim(2005) made by modifying Wehmeyer's The Arc's Self-Determination Scale, was used. The test was performed before and after the intervention and analyzed descriptive statistically according to the sub-categories of self-determination abilities. The study results were as follows.
Firstly, the study results showed that mathematics learning based on self-determination learning model of instruction had positive effects on mathematics achievement. The average baseline was 8.75, which was very low. However, the average after intervention was 55.95, which was improved by 47.2 compared to the baseline, and the average maintenance was 68.75, which was improved by 60. Thus the mathematics achievement was improved and the score was maintained comparatively steadily.
Secondly, the study results showed that mathematics learning based on self-determination learning model of instruction had positive effects on self-determination abilities. The 3 students showed quantitative improvement.
Consequently, it showed that applying self-determination learning model of instruction as well as other programs in the school hours of students with intellectual disabilities could improve achievement and self-determination abilities and make it easier to access to the general curriculum.
