When we divide the Korean Peninsula into several parts in terms of folk songs, Chungcheong province is a region of which character is not clearly defined. There is no specific Tori in Chungcheong province. Still there are reasons why we should take a thorough look on this area which is located in the center of Korea as we study folk songs. Comparing with the north Chungcheong province where Menaritory is prominent, south Chungcheong province has lot traits and these diversity should be arranged. Also, proximity of Gyeonggi province, the yellow sea, and north Jeolla province can raise some exceptional features which require more delicate study on it.
There are not many study on Chungcheong province, however, and even the field had been studied comes with limitations. Accordingly, in this study, I ordered the distribution condition of music in south Chungcheong province by understanding the mode in rice-planting songs of the province which were reported in 『MBC KoreaFolksongCorpus』. The findings of this study are as follows.
Firstly, in rice-planting songs of south Chungcheong province, all Toris such as Menaritori, Gyeongtori, Yukjabeagitori, mixed Menaritori and Yukjabeagitori, and Mi-Ra-Do structure appears, but only except Susimgatori appears.
Secondly, even though there were some cases that could not ignore the influence of adjacent regons, it was impossible to divide the distribution condition of Tori by regional boundaries. For example, Toris which are not related with the nearby regions appear, and songs from same province with different Toris can be observed. Some songs have same form of lyric but have different Toris and the Toris also have no relation with the nearby region. Also in some cases, a song has two Toris or a song has mixed two Toris show distance from where those songs are recorded to where two Toris are belonged.
Thirdly, a Tori that is different from other regions and prominent among whole south Chungcheong area and neighboring regions did not appear. In other words, there is no special mode that considered as Tori for south Chungcheong province.
As a result, studying rice-planting songs, south Chungcheong province contains Menaritori, Gyeongtori, Yukjabeagitori, a mixed one that Menaritori with Yukjabeagitori, and a formed one that has Mi-Ra-Do, and Menaritori is the most prominent tori. Some toris did seem to be influenced by adjacent areas but mostly various mode sporadically appeared among the province and there was no specific mode which can be classified as south Chungcheong's tori. In other words, in south Chungcheong, there is no specific tori but ‘various mode’ exists.
