This study was started for the purpose of trying to prevent suicide of teenagers by easing the suicide concept of teenagers, reduce the teenager suicide and contribute in specific practical strategies to strive for a complete escape from suicide risks by teenagers who had attempted suicide in the past after clarifying the psychological․social factors on thought of suicide and the specific details on how they have overcome the thoughts of suicide through an in-depth interview targeting teenagers who have repeatedly attempted suicide.
In this study, 3 participants who have repeatedly attempted suicide during their teenage years were selected to perform in-depth interview, recorded the conversation while the data gained through the interview has been analyzed according to the case analysis format of Robert K, Yin which is based on the interaction of personal, family and social environments. The summarized results of the study are as follows.
First, the reason for attempting suicide was mainly shown as conflictsㆍviolence between family members, especially from the dysfunctional communication with parents, maladjustment to school life and conflicts appeared among peers. The conflict within family act as a huge stress as the dysfunctional communication consisted of one sided order between parent-child and stopped communication, indifference, violence or the change of family structure such as divorce or separation making the participants feel spiritless and sense of frustration while being connected to lack of affection and depression to show effect even in the maladjustment to school life. Even in the results of this study, all participants were shown to have attempted suicide from the change of structure within family and dysfunctional communication.
Second, there were no great personal changes of participants after attempting suicide. This had also played a role in giving wound to the participants and attempting suicide frequently at the time as the family and surrounding support systems have passed by the suicide attempt of participants, having one-time interest toward such behavior or rather keep being indifferent even after finding out about such behavior. However, although the reaction in the peer group showed a different aspect from the reaction of family, it didn't become much help to the participants who felt suicide impulse at the time.
Third, as the factor for overcoming the thoughts of suicide, they got hope by feeling the value of existence by themselves while becoming self aware that one must love oneself first such as realizing love after looking at the tears of a family member or discovering a way to open up one's anger or suppressed heart through help of peer group or a specialist. This became an opportunity to demonstrate flexibility in relationship by changing the way one thinks by participants on their own to play a role in easing the thought of suicide.
Fourth, the mental state after overcoming the thought of suicide has brought a great psychological change as time passed by due to reactions from the surrounding system. The situation of participants didn't change much even after overcoming the thoughts of suicide and although the cause for having the thoughts of suicide and making the attempted still remained, the participants themselves formed a sense of self identity gradually as time passed by within situations that do not change a great deal and the opportunity to have strength for them to stand up from the thoughts of suicide through self-examination was prepared.
Fifth, in terms of how they are currently dealing with the problem in case the feeling of helplessness and sense of frustration․psychological pain to fall into the thoughts of suicide comes once again, all participants said that they are overcoming their own situation through change of thought in trying to set their own goals and making effort to accomplish them while dealing with the problem using a will to get over the reality and making specific plans for the future.
Finally, concerning to imitated suicide of teenagers related to suicide report of famous people, the participants of this study were perceiving the situation of famous people and their own situation as being completely different in case of the participants of this study while rather making cynical expressions as a subject beyond interest. This means the excessive report of the media may rather cause unfavorable results to teenagers with unstable sense of self-identity to be shown as trigger-effect of stirring up the suicide.
As examined from this study, most thoughts of suicide and suicide attempts are originated from conflicts and indifference caused by dysfunctional communication between family members or a sense of alienation felt from family members while a loose social support system with peer group can lead to depression, low self-esteem and failure of self control by teenagers.
This is the part which coincides with study results shown in the existing teenager suicide related theoretical studies (Hye Seok Seo, 2006; Byung Geum Park, 2007; Soon Kyu Kim, 2008; Jin Ah Ryu, 2009) while the activity through formation of more diverse community with people with same experience along with interaction in family or peer relationship that can have an easing effect toward the thoughts of teenage suicide at a nearest place reduces the thoughts of suicide by teenagers and could be considered as becoming helpful in the overcoming process. While the daily stress that teenagers who couldn't mature in the course of development must go through and adapt to becomes shown as the lack of confidence toward loving relationships at a point when they feel they cannot gain sympathy from anyone and nobody knows about their own pain, it is considered that they will finally restore sense of trust toward people and the teenagers themselves would become free from the thoughts of suicide at a point when they feel they can get help from someone and that they are existences who can be loved.
In other words, a more active program that can form a healthy sense of self identity by teenagers themselves and improve the ability to solve problems by raising their own inherent strength would have to be developed by providing a multilateral education and active intervention toward teenager development process to family members (parents) who can be most helpful while making effort to prevent teenage suicide by preparing a more realistic social support system.
Through the results of this study, all social members would have to become aware once again that the most important times in planning and making preparations for the future are the teenage years and approach teenagers through specific and systematic suicide prevention program so that they can grow into a healthy person by escaping from the risks of suicide.
