Since modernism a development of materialistic value gave us cultural advantage, it also caused a serious social problem like environmental contamination, inhumanity, and extreme divide on the other hand.
Especially space is sort of materialistic element that affects directly on human behavior and it become a center of all social issues. But recognition of the problem chose an oriental philosophy as a solution that cultural code named 'fusion.' Fusion is a combination of western & oriental culture and has same value. But Oriental spirit seen by western perspective is just function of 'The others', for this reason western culture interpreted oriental philosophy in their own perspective.
Traditional housing space in long history has been settled down as good and unchanging cultural legacy for its natural feature, and it still remains as a familiar space even in highly developed civilization. For this reason, so many previous researches have been made regarding this issue, from which I tried to get immeasurable value in the space. I examined oriental-philosophy-based space, its structure & type, and beautiful color of traditional space and differentiated them from western space. Though I made a difference in terms of cultural feature, I failed to suggest an alternative to search western space in a deeper level because I concentrated too much on functional & material value of traditional space.
This study is to examine what is true immaterial value of traditional space caused by human mentality & emotion while previous researches focused on materialistic perspective of its functions & types. Effect of immaterial value seen in a space is appeared either very quickly or fragmentary, sometime it may remain as a cultural value or unique identity, and it may lose at other times. For it is reinterpretation of immaterial value that is denied due to not provable feature of similarity between metaphysical aspect of traditional space and its embodiment in nature. So it seems to be a sort of psychological approach to a space.
This study consists of following contents;
The chapter 1 stipulated background, purpose, and its extent of this study. To solve previous problem about materialistic-value-centered of space, I come up with an idea how to examine a immaterial value of traditional space & dualistic approach.
The chapter 2 examined previous researches with philosophical approach toward necessity of this study and its differentiation in terms of research method. This paper analyzed some errors of western recognition about space and materialistic interpretation of oriental philosophy, and suggested a immaterial model of interpretation. Through which I set 5 hypotheses of immaterial value to apply into traditional space.
The chapter 3 analyzed and examined the 5 hypotheses of immaterial value. I named them respectively as Jaram-ter, saleum-kol, balgeun-nae, euol- gan, and meomul-got, and I proved that all five of them have their own immaterial value. Jaram-ter is a space in which human can grow in nature; saleum-kol is spatial life of material and its impact on user's behavior; balgeun-nae means favorite color to give mental stability and its affection on human emotion; euol-gan means space usage and its cultural impact on it. meomul-got means spatial preference in accordance with its variables and friendly reaction in terms of immaterial value.
The chapter 4 applied what I analyzed in previous chapter directly into immaterial value, and then I interpreted and suggested it as a design rule of traditional space. On this paper, I suggested a possible application with clear definition of immaterial value, on which provided a future trend of design such as solution on policy and consilientapproach.
immaterial value is not a unique of traditional housing space rather it mental-cultural heritage of all humankind based on dualistic philosophy.
This paper proved its impact on traditional space largely affected by mental culture in 5 different extents to clarify the immaterial value.
Albeit a immaterial value on traditional space appeared, in similar type, in China & Japan or sometimes it otherwise came down to modern housing, it can be defined as ultural creature or invisible asset with strong identity of traditional space. Accordingly, clarification about immaterial value implied around culture as a whole can be clearly defined and secured sympathy of all members through a space. For instance, a immaterial value can be a substitution for Korean wave (Hallyu Gale) to solve present inertia when we consider it with discussion about its future direction. In addition, it also can be an effective indicator of cultural policies in Korea well known for mental culture.
