The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of the teacher efficacy, problem-solving pattern and goal instability of elementary teachers on their job engagement and burnout, and it's additionally meant to determine whether their problem-solving pattern and goal instability served as a parameter between teacher efficacy and burnout. The subjects in this study were 400 teachers who were selected by random sampling from elementary schools in Seoul. A survey was conducted to serve the purpose of the study.
The findings of the study were as follows:
First, the teacher efficacy level of the elementary teachers investigated was positively correlated to their job engagement, rational problem solving and goal instability, and negatively to negative problem orientation, emotional exhaustion, dehumanization and a loss of personal achievement.
Second, teacher efficacy turned out to contribute to boosting job engagement and lightening burnout(emotional exhaustion, dehumanization and a loss of personal achievement).
Third, out of problem-solving styles, the rational pattern served to bolster job engagement and relieve a loss of personal achievement, but a negative problem orientation resulted in detracting from job engagement and stepping up emotional exhaustion and a loss of personal achievement.
Fourth, goal instability turned out to contribute to stirring up job engagement and relieving burnout(emotional exhaustion, dehumanization and a loss of personal achievement).
Fifth, the rational problem-solving pattern turned out to perform a mediating role among teacher efficacy, job engagement, dehumanization and a loss of personal achievement, and the negative problem orientation and impulsive problem-solving pattern turned out to fulfill a mediating role among teacher efficacy, emotional exhaustion and dehumanization.
Sixth, goal instability turned out to function as a parameter among teacher efficacy, job engagement and burnout(emotional exhaustion, dehumanization and a loss of personal achievement).
In a word, teacher efficacy could be said to bolster job engagement and alleviate burnout in a firsthand manner, and that could also be said to boost job engagement and curb burnout in a secondhand way through problem-solving pattern and goal instability.
The meaning of this study lies in making it clear that teacher efficacy is one of significant variables to ease burnout, and this study was also meaningful in that it served as an opportunity for future research efforts to focus on job engagement, which exerts a positive influence on individuals and organizations, instead of merely dealing with burnout.
