The purposes of this study were to examine the preschool teachers' awareness of the children's rights and to explore the possibility of the education to the preschoolers for the four basic children's rights by the U.N. Convention on the Rights of the Child(CRC) in association with the life themes of the curriculum in the early childhood education institutions. The research questions were as follows:
    1. How is the awareness of the preschool teachers' awareness of the preschoolers rights?
1-1. Are there significant differences between the daycare center teachers' awareness of preschoolers rights and the kindergarten teachers' awareness of the preschoolers rights?
1-2. Are there significant differences among the preschool teachers's awareness of preschoolers rights according to their age, academic credential and teaching experience?
    2. What is the possibility of education about the rights of preschoolers in association with the yearly life themes of the curriculum in the early childhood education institutions?
2-1 Are there significant differences between daycare center teachers and kindergarten teachers in their view of the possibility of education for the rights of preschoolers in association with the yearly life themes of the curriculum in the early childhood education institutions?
    3. How often is held the preschoolers rights education in conjunction with the yearly life themes of thecurriculum in the early childhood education institutions?
The subjects in this study were 100 district-run daycare centers and 100 kindergarten teachers in Seoul and Gyeonggi Province who included the heads of the institutions. After a survey was conducted by mail, the answer sheets from 82 kindergarten teachers and 90 daycare center teachers were gathered, and the answer sheets from 156 respondents who involved 80 kindergarten teachers and 76 daycare center teachers were analyzed except for 16 incomplete ones.
The questionnaire used to assess their perception of the rights of preschoolers was revised and supplemented based on the questionnaire used in Kim Sei-jin(2002)'s study of the awareness of parents and teachers on preschool's rights. The questionnaire for the possibility education about of the preschoolers rights in association with the yearly life themes of the curriculum in the early childhood education institution was developed by the researcher.
A SPSS 12.0 program was utilized to analyze the collected data. Statistical data on frequency and percentage were obtained to find out the general characteristics of the teachers, and t-test was carried out to see if there were any differences between the two groups in their awareness of the rights of preschoolers. ANOVA was employed to figure out the influence of their age, academic background and career, and chi-square test was implemented to explore the possibility of education about the four basic rights of preschoolers advocated by the U.N. CRC in conjunction with the yearly themes of the curriculum in the early childhood education institutions. Besides, another statistical data on percentage were acquired to check the degree of education for the rights of preschoolers in light of the yearly themes of the early childhood education institutions.
The major findings of the study were as follows:
First, there were significant differences between the kindergarten and daycare center teachers in their awareness of the rights of preschoolers. The daycare center teachers' awareness of the preschoolers rights were significantly higher than the kindergarten teachers' awareness of the preschoolers rights.
Second, the age, academic credential and teaching experience of the early childhood education institution teachers made no statistically significant differences to their awareness of the rights of preschoolers.
Third, as for the possibility of education for the rights of preschoolers, there were significant differences between the daycare teachers and the kindergarten teachers when the educational institutions dealt with 'me and kindergarten(daycare center),' 'warm spring,' 'various animals,' and 'space trip' as yearly life themes.
Fourth concerning the degree of education for the rights of preschoolers based on the U.N. CRC, their rights were taught once or twice a month in general though there were some differences according to the yearly themes. It indicated that education for the rights of preschoolers was relatively on the right track.
The findings of the study suggested that in order to value and improve the rights of preschoolers, early childhood education institutions should take an inclusive approach to that education instead of providing it just in an isolated manner, and they should pay more attention to the rights of preschoolers and make sustained efforts to guarantee their basic rights of survival, protection, development and participation.
