This article intends to concretize the semantic system of Korean taste adjectives and describe its schema clearly. Through this, it will examine the extension principle of word meaning. Ultimately, this can be the process of generalizing the semantic system of not only taste adjectives but sensory words and general vocabulary as well.
To achieve the goal, this study will get to discuss mainly the ‘category and schema’, ‘polysemy and metaphorㆍmetonymy’, and ‘iconicity’ based on the cognitive semantic research grounded on human cognitive ability. They are based on the hypothesis that the conceptual structure of human beings cannot be separated from linguistic meaning, so they can be highly persuasive in explaining the ‘semantic system and extension principle’. The process of this discussion will be as follows.
Chapter Ⅰ will define taste adjectives as ‘sweet’, ‘bitter’, ‘sour’, ‘salty’, ‘spicy’, and ‘puckery’ series and ‘complex taste’ series adjectives and introduce how to analyze them by applying cognitive linguistic methodology.
Chapter Ⅱ will select taste adjectives in each series which are actively being used and closely examine their meaning through corpus analysis. Based on this, it will also check the patterns of semantic extension concretely as figuring out the semantic category and schema of each word.
Next, Chapter Ⅲ will investigate the ground that forms the semantic schema of taste adjectives discussed earlier in Chapter Ⅱ by dividing the mechanism inducing the semantic extension of words into metaphorical and iconic mechanism. This paper explains metaphorical mechanism as dividing it into metaphor and metonymy and deduces the semantic extension principle of taste adjectives from the ‘complex operation of metaphor and metonymy’. Furthermore, it will also study how effectively ‘quantitative iconicity’ and ‘orderly iconicity’ play a role as iconic mechanism in enriching the meaning of taste adjectives.
Chapter Ⅳ will sum up the above contents to finish this article.
