『한영자뎐』의 표제어에 대한 국어학적 연구 = A Korean Linguistic Study on the Headword in 『Han-yeongjadyeon』

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The purpose of this research is not only to analyze the characters and problems focusing on the headword in 『Han-yeongjadyeon』 from the Korean linguistic view but also to discuss the place and meaning in the Korean dictionary history.
Horace Grant Underwood's 『Han-yeongjadyeon』 is the first Korean-English dictionary. For the reason, 『Han-yeongjadyeon』 is one of the best resources for understanding the features of the early days of Korean dictionary history as well as grasping the Korean language at that time through the changing period data from 19c to 20c printed in the dictionary. There is a need to go deep into study of the dictionary, 『Han-yeongjadyeon』 which shows an early stage of the western dictionary, since there is no research defining the dictionary's traits in detail.
This study aims to examine the characters and problems of western modern dictionary for the Korean language and also, define the place of the dictionary with the headword. The reason to focus on the headword is that the headword is the only part of the Korean language in 『Han-yeongjadyeon』.
『Han-yeongjadyeon』, which is the early days of westernized dictionary, does not seem to be a systematic dictionary. It describes an entry word and meaning in short so that, it does not have organized classification system with grammatical traits or semantics. Even not only phonological data but also information on native tongue and borrowed word are not printed in the dictionary systematically. There is a lemma more than a word such as sentence or phrase form. Although a lemma is a form of a word, there is no standard for transcribing.
Grammatically, the headword should be presented independently. It can be expected that verbs as a headword should be presented as a fundamental form but, verbs in the dictionary are presented with a conjugated form such as ‘Ha-o che’. In addition to the way of presenting the headword, interpreting meaning, there is no division between homonym and multisense.
Despite of the fact, it should be accepted that 『Han-yeongjadyeon』 plays much of a role in establishing the frame of Korean dictionary for 『Han-yeongjadyeon』 roughs out important traits of the modern dictionary.
