As specified in the Law of Education that the objective of university education is to teach and research academic theories/application methods and promote the personality with leadership, which are necessary for the advancement of the nation and human society, voluntary service activities may be one of the approaches to facilitate the effective realization and implementation of the ideology and function of university education, given that simple lectures and the instruction methods for experiment and practical learning are not sufficient to fulfill the aforesaid ideology and function of university in reality.
Therefore, the purpose of this study is to consider the perception toward voluntary service activities and the pattern of participation activities according to DISC, the behavioral pattern diagnosis program, when university students participate in the voluntary service and examine whether the behavioral pattern is related to the satisfaction with the voluntary service activities, and based on that, this study attempts to provide useful basis for increasing the participation of university students in voluntary service activities and their satisfaction.
For this study, data were collected from 171 students of one(1) university located at Ulsan, Busan, Gyeongju, who had the experiences in voluntary service activities, and the collected data were analyzed through SPSS/PC for Windows 12.0. The collected data were analyzed through frequency analysis, cross tabulation analysis, t-test, and ANOVA.
Major findings of this study can be summarized as follows:
First, the distribution of DISC behavioral pattern of university students indicated that the bright and pleasant 'influence' comprised the highest portion of the surveyed, followed by the 'dominance' and 'conscientiousness' that had the same ratio of distribution, and the 'steadiness' showed somewhat lower ratio of distribution.
Second, as for the current perception of university students toward voluntary service activities and their current participation in voluntary service activities, it was found that the most favorite personality was the kind personality in terms of the personality of the person, with whom they wanted to participate in the voluntary service activities, followed by socially eloquent personality(I), humble personality(S)>attractive personality(I)(kind personality(S)>socially eloquent personality(I)>humble personality (S)>attractive personality).
It was found that the ratio of those who said 'yes' was a little bit higher in the 'influence' regarding the credit relating to voluntary service activities, and in relation to whether they had any experience in university club activities, the ratio of 'influence' answer among students, who experienced university club activities was, a little bit high. It was confirmed that although the 'influence' comprised high portion among the surveyed a high ratio was also found in terms of activity.
Third, in terms of the degree of satisfaction that the university students draw with voluntary service activities based on DISC pattern, the satisfaction with voluntary service activities was highest in influence, followed by dominance, and then conscientiousness(influence>dominance>conscientiousness).
The distribution based on the level of satisfaction with voluntary service activities was highest in the dominance, followed by influence, conscientiousness, and steadiness(dominance>influence>conscientiousness>steadiness). Considering the result of both patterns, voluntary service activities of extrovert dominance and influence orientation resulted in higher satisfaction.
Based on those findings of research, it was confirmed that university students drew different degree of satisfaction from voluntary service activities, depending on the behavioral pattern, and on the basis of that, their satisfaction with voluntary service activities may increase by allowing them to participate in the types of voluntary service activities that are proper for their behavioral patterns through various participatory programs or prior education programs.
