To recognize subjects, man uses not only the five senses but also the function of brains. To process all the information sent by the five senses, the brains have the function of simplifying factual information and sometimes recognize false information which is re-filtered through re-recognizing by different information as true. This phenomenon, which wants to accept not all the information but some desired information, is called the effect of 'context' in the field of visual aesthetics. This is a basic principle of limited animation and the integral portion of this study as well.
Limited animation has begun with the progressive disposition of 'image-oriented changes' and with the practical limitation of 'reduction of production cost'. It is classified into American style and Japanese one by its method of expression, and these two styles take root as representative ones through limited habits. In addition, limited animation is further divided by its sub-factors, namely the exaggerated gestures of motion and static aesthetics, the geometrical and naturalistic expression of images, and the influence of limited direction upon the simplicity and complexity of narrative, and these signifiers present 'the visual stabilization of limited direction technique' via the process of signification.
In case of American limited of which focus is on the geometric stylization, the slapstick-centered simple composition of plot is characteristic and the past establishment of character is relatively not complex. In addition, even in adult contents, it bears a form which audience can easily understand via clear goals and simplified composition, and attaches great importance to the 'technique of action direction' which emphasizes movement. On the other hand, Japanese limited, of which focus is on production cost, reduces unnecessary actions maximally with complex composition of plot and delivers stories through speech-oriented explanation. In order to deliver these complex narrative, it has developed a variety of limited techniques, but most of them depend on the 'technique of camera direction' and make a few pictures appeared as if moving. As a result, the difference between 'the two techniques of movement' and between 'the two techniques of camera' is utilized to proceed both complex and simple stories in an organically different manner.
In this study, the investigator analyzed every shot for the limited direction techniques presented in the TV series animation. The investigator examined the results again by combining them with the organic relationship of narrative. And then, after verifying the fact that camera direction has firsthand influence upon the number of story-making sheets, the investigator examined the use pattern of camera direction in order to analyze the minimal constant which provides visual stabilization to limited animation.
Limited animation literally means 'limitation'. Limited consists not only of 8 sheets per second. Regardless of 12 or 24 sheets, limited animation means the abnormal extension of picture-taking of frames within the limitation of certain production cost and number of sheet. Regardless of their start points, namely 'image-oriented changes' and 'survival-style limitation', both American and Japanese styles have been successful in their stylization. This kind of analysis of limited direction can be a definite criterion for producers who create a style according to narratives or image expressions. Therefore, studies on the correlation between categorized direction techniques and narratives can be applied to commercial limited animation.
