The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of storytelling activities with songs on young children’s language ability and musicality.
In order to achieve the goal the following two research questions were established. First, what effects does storytelling using songs have on young children’s language ability in terms of vocabulary, language comprehension, and language expression? Second, what effects does storytelling using songs have on young children’s musicality in terms of sense of sound and sense of rhythm?
The subjects of this study were 30 five-year-old children at J childcare center in G Metropolitan City (15 in the storytelling group, 15 in the control group) to measure their language ability and musicality. Instrument developed by Chang(1981) for 4~6‐year‐old children, and revised and supplemented by Park(1996) was used to measure their language ability. The instrument is composed of vocabulary, language comprehension, and language expression.
PMMA (Primary Measures of Music Audition) developed by Gordon (2004) was used to measure children’s musicality. The instrument was designed to test the sense of sound and the sense of rhythm.
Collected data were analyzed using SPSS Win 10.1, and paired-t test was used to analyze the difference between the groups.
The results of the study are summarized as follows.
First, children’s language ability of storytelling group children was increased statistically significant from that of the control group. This result suggests that storytelling with songs is an effective teaching method in enhancing young children’s language ability.
Second, children’s musicality storytelling group children was increased statistically significant from that of the control group. This result suggests that storytelling using songs is an effective teaching method in enhancing young children’s musicality.
In conclusion, storytelling with songs appeared to be an effective teaching method in enhancing young children’s language ability. The method has positive effects particularly on language expression among the sub-factors of language abilities. In addition, storytelling with songs has positive effects on young children’s musicality particularly in developing their sense of sound among the sub-factors of musicality.
