Musok is the traditional religion of Korea which has existed among the people for thousands of years. It has survived to this day despite the fact that it has been treated unfairly being subjected to persecution and condemnation for a long time. During the period of Koryo and Chosun dynasties, Musok had been the subject for contempt, not for scholarly studies. Studies on Musok had originated at the end of Chosun dynasty and stared in earnest in the japanese colonial period. It was unfortunate times for Korean people, Western powers bore down upon the nation claiming the right of the strongest and the studies and researches of Musok had first started by christian missionaries as one of the means to subjugate and control Korean people. In other words, It could be said that their studies have started to establish christianity in Korea.
Christian missionaries did not properly understand Musok and identified it with shamanism. The term shamanism adopted by missionaries was used by Korean scholars like Son Jin-tae and Choi Nam-seon during the colonial period.
To understand Korean Musok, the researcher of this study; First, made comparisons between Korean Musok and northern shamanism based on written sources. The similar comparison was also made with spirit mediumship of the south.
Secondly, to understand the 'possession', the researcher has actually gone through it.
Thirdly, the researcher has made observations of the rituals and the divinations performed by Mudang and had in-depth interviews with them. their statements have been compared with the researcher's own experience.
As a result, the researcher has reached following conclusions.
Korean Musok is more closely related to the spirit mediumship of the south in which possession is more typical than the shamanism of the north where the 'ecstasy' is the main activity of the shamans.
Mubyeong, the initiation disease is not inevitable and can be skipped over if the Mudang receives the spirit when the preceding symptoms of the disease appears. On the other hand, Mudang candidate learns the formalities and knowledges for the rituals and other activities during Naerim-gut, the initiation rite, through its process of Heoteun-gut⇒Naerim-gut⇒Soteul-gut. The course of learning for Mudang candidate shows the strong bond between the spirit-parent and spirit-child. In terms of the trance, whistling, shivering and yawing which have been known as the conditions before the possession, seems to be the behaviors in the state of possession and thus couldn't be considered as trance. this suggests the possibility that phenomena of trance among the shamans of north could also occur in ecstasy and not before the ecstasy.
Until now, Korean Musok has been observed within the framework which has been established in the west and the mode of ecstasy or possession after the trance has been considered as coincides with northern shamanism or Korean Musok. Results of this research suggests that the trance does not precede the entrance in ecstasy or possession. Rather, it seems to be the one of the consequences of ecstasy or possession.
So the researcher suggests the use of the term mediumism as a broad definition covers both ecstasy and possession and intends to explain the differences between ecstasy and possession.
There are also new discoveries in the process of the research. Kangshinmu (A term indicates those who are initiated into their Mudang status through a ceremony) in Korea generally see the 'spirit-fire', traditionally in the shape of a fireball, the sun or a star but in the case of a recently initiated Mudang, the spirit-fire often took the form of a headlight of a car. Another phenomena among some of Korean Kangshinmu is the ‘journey of the spirit' during their prayers in the mountains. It is regrettable that the possible connection between this and the ecstasy of northern shamans has to be dealt with in the future researches.
The results of the study implies that it is essential for the understanding of Musok that the studies on the spirit mediumship of the south have to be considered in addition to the northern shamanism. Due to the lack of research and written sources in the former's field, enough comparative study was difficult to conduct. Thus, further researches on this subject should be taken.
