This study was carried out to propose an optimum model predicting suicidal ideation by systematically verifying the relationship among negative human relations, stress, depression and suicidal ideation of adolescents. Also it compared the differences between genders, and level of schools for the purpose of reviewing the necessity of differentiated intervention between groups.
For verification of set model, 1,400 copies of questionnaires were distributed to the students in boys and girls middle and high schools located in northern part of Gyeongsangbuk-do, and then data were collected. The collected data were verified by statistical package SPSS/Win 12.0 and AMOS 5.0 program.
According to the research problem, the results of this study are summarized as follow.
First, negative relations with parents and peer adolescents recognize had a significant relationship with stress, depression and suicidal ideation, as a result of verifying multi-dimensional approach model. Stress had a significant influence on depression, and depression had a significant effect on suicidal ideation. Also in the result of comparing goodness-of-fit of a structural model and three competition models, a structural model presented the highest goodness-of-fit. It means that the most significant method is a multi-dimensional verification by setting up consolidated model among negative human relations, stress, depression and suicidal ideation in the predicting model of suicidal ideation.
Second, in the result of analyzing the difference between groups of gender in the structural model, negative relation with a teacher in boy students showed a significant difference in stress and suicidal ideation. In case of girl students, negative relation between parents and offspring had a significant difference in stress and suicidal ideation, and negative peer relation had a significant difference in depression and suicidal ideation. Also stress presented a significant difference in depression, while depression showed a significant difference in suicidal ideation.
In the result of analyzing the difference between school levels, negative relation between parents and offspring in middle schools had a significant difference in stress, and negative peer relation presented a significant difference in depression. For high school students, negative relations with parents-offspring and peer had a significant difference in suicidal ideation, and depression presented a significant difference in suicidal ideation.
From these results, understanding of the psycho-behavioral characteristics of adolescents can not be understood by explaining only one factor, but this has to be dealt with a multidimensional approach. Therefore, it implies that the differentiated approach is needed for male and female students, and level of schools.
