The so-called "crisis of public education" in schools has been the hot issue of the discussion, in which the reality of moral education is questioned above all. It will be difficult to give a clear answer to the question, but this paper intends to consider alternative education as a new alternative plan to the education of ethical studies. The goal of the education of ethical studies is to build morality and in alternative education, it is being attained through many chances. And in the center of the chances, the education of ethical studies should be positioned. Therefore, this paper intends to study the alternative education which will become a new way for the education of ethical studies and will make a contribution to it. It will examine the definition and the current status of alternative education, and discuss morality which is the goal of the education of ethical studies. In addition, this paper will study the direction of its application in alternative education, through which it will try to find out the way of the alternative education which will make a contribution to the education of ethical studies.
The ideology that alternative education pursues is a new school and a new society that the problems with the reality are solved. It is improving and changing the existing education on the basis of the belief in human beings, mutual understanding, and responsibility, and newly thinking about education. Depending on the values that alternative schools pursue, the schools can be classified into: 'Free School Type', 'Ecological School Type', 'Re-Adaptive School Type', and 'Educational Ideology-Pursuit Type'.
The significance of the education of ethical studies lies in cultivating 'morality'. That is, teachers teach what 'morality' is to students, let them have the awareness of 'ethical problems', 'judge' problems on the basis of morality, and behave, and further, help them build 'morality'. Teachers should teach moral standards to students and help them formulate the standards for recognizing moral problems. In addition, in the education of ethical studies, teachers should help students recognize what 'a moral problem' is and should cultivate students' 'ability of judging morally'. 'Moral judgment' is thinking about the best solution and making a decision when a moral problem happens. The actual goal of the education of ethical studies, which can be attained through the class of ethical studies, is cultivating 'morality'. In the case of those who have morality, several factors of morality in the fields of recognition, justice, and behaviors are harmonized, balanced, and integrated at the same time.
This paper will examine all the regular/irregular curricular/extra-curricular contents of alternative education to find out the factors that will contribute to the inflammation of morality: group-based discussion, specialized subject class, reinforcement of human education, pursuit of integrated education, recovery of self-control and strengthening of subjectivity, diversification of community activities, substantialization of experience education, strengthening of autonomous activities, pursuit of independent education, and strengthening of morality through the difference in educational methods.
For the education that helps each student grow up well and that helps students realize the values of self-control, independence, and win-win, and for the school that helps students find their own ways and that helps students solve their internal problems, there should be the process of learning suitable for students and the teachers who can watch them. It is the alternative school that strives to make such environment. The school that makes alternative plans in order for students to find out themselves and substantialize morality is the goal of the education of ethical studies.
As a result of studying the factors that can substantialize morality in alternative education for the purpose of squarely facing the basic limitations of the existing education and overcoming the limitations, this paper suggests alternative education as an alternative plan to contribute to the education of ethical studies.
