This study is a cultural description that critically examines the characteristics of SNS and analyzes whether they have any relations with the formation of social capital. SNS users recognize its characteristics in different ways according to different usage patterns and there are accordingly different effects on social capital formation.
For the research survey, samples of people who are mainly users of mini homepages in their twenties and thirties were chosen. Also included were people who use other SNSs, for analysis of whether there are differences in the characteristics of different SNSs. The researchers carried out in-depth interviews with mini homepage users, and focused on supplementing the interview contents through the analysis of major SNS cases.
This study focuses on the following two issues: First, it examines whether Cyworld mini homepages have the characteristics as an SNS. It investigates whether the users of those homepages accept the characteristics of SNS produced through existing study results and make use of them as such, by describing their SNS activities in critical ways. Second, this study pays attention to whether the characteristics of SNS produced through research have any relation with the formation of social capital. Through social contact, we meet many different kinds of people and form various relationships, but not all these numerous meetings and relations lead to the formation of social capital. For that reason, this study looks into what conditions have to be considered in order to form social capital and foresee the possibility of SNS growth in the future.
There are some results obtained in this study relating to the above two subjects. First, through in-depth interviews with people, it has been confirmed that Cyworld mini homepage users have different approaches in using the homepages: checking and being active only when there is a notice for update; using limited part of the menus only to keep their records; closing one’s own mini homepages and exploring those of other users; actively using the mini homepages by forming various relations and making use of all the services, or pursuing various other activities of SNS rather than using mini homepages. Based on these different usage patterns, the users are divided in five different groups: users who are not active in their homepages but only being alert for updates or for certain interests; users who keep records in limited usage; users who have a closed attitude but enjoy taking a look at other people’s homepages; active users; and users keen to reach out to others. According to these different types of users, different characteristics of SNS are marked. This diversification among different levels of groups can be important for corporations which are trying to develop an existing SNS or devise a new SNS. Second, it has been ascertained that rather than forming relations with one SNS, users are becoming more active in forming complex relationships through multiple SNS and message systems. Also, in the mini homepages, as the center of this study, it was shown that the formation of expressive social capital was stronger than instrumental social capital, and the users tend mainly to form close relations through emotional friendship. Third, in the process of looking for research objects, it was sensed that mini homepages have an element of ‘weakness in strong ties’, and in other sites as Naver cafe or other SNSs, an element of ‘strength in weak ties’ could be noticed. Fourth, it was ascertained that certain elements including the small pop-up windows, closed structure and weakness in the approach path in mini homepages can disturb the effective usage of SNS.
The Korean domestic internet market is expanding rapidly and the characteristics of SNS are also changing rapidly according to the market change to follow the trend. This study emphasizes the effect of the characteristics of SNS according to the user types on the formation of social capital and has some meaning in that it has defined concretely the cultural possibility of better lives for SNS users in this information society.
