This study is to identify on how the parents and their adolescent children in the junior high school perform an interactive communication between them, and how such communication pattern relates to the conflict resolution strategy with friends that is a very important peer relationship in school life, how such communication pattern affects on depression and behavioral problems of them so as to prevent their inappropriate behaviors. Also the study aims to identify variables that can be more helpful in shaping the righteous personality through family life as well as in school life and furthermore for their study courses so as to provide referencing materials in exploring the measures for effective intervention.
The topics that this study dealt with are as follows
First, What kind of relationship does the interactive parents-child communication have with the conflict resolution strategy between friends? Second, What kind of relationship does the interactive parents-child communication have with the depression of youth? Third, What kind of relationship does the interactive parents-child communication have with the behavioral problem of the youth?
For the study, the sample group was selected with 198 male and female students who attended as the 1st and 2nd grades to the junior high school located in Ulsan Area. The collected data was treated use of SPSS/PC+(Statistical Package for the Social Science) 14.0 program, to perform the frequency analysis, t-test, analysis on correlation and multiple regression analysis.
The summary of results identified by this study is as followings
First. for the interactive parents-child communication, it was identified that open communication with parents has effects on the conflict resolution strategy between friends. It was found that more positive communication the child has with parents, compromise/cooperation has increased for the conflict resolution strategy between friends, and also showed that open communication with mother has much effects on the conflict resolution strategy between friends such as dodging
The result also showed that dysfunctional communication with mother had significant effects on domination, while the 1st grade junior high students made less yielding than the 2nd grade students in the conflict resolution strategy between friends
Secondly, dysfunctional communication with parents had significant effects on the depression of youth as result. Among the depressive symptoms, male students were appeared to have less emotional depression than female students. When more dysfunctional communication with father they had, more of behavioral disorder and interest loss were appeared from the youth. Also, when they had open communication with parents, the result was that both male and female students showed lower depression.
Thirdly, dysfunctional communication with parents was appeared to have result of increasing the behavioral problem of the youth. The dysfunctional communication with mother was appeared to have significant effects on the behavioral problem of the youth, in particular, in related patterns with pleasure, violation of public morals, rebelling against authority, violence and theft. The dysfunctional communication with father had significant effects on the behavioral problem in pattern of running away. Also it was identified when more open communication with mother they had, the behavioral problem of the youth in running away pattern got less.
Conclusively, for the relativity of the interactive parents-child communication to the conflict resolution strategy between friends, depression and the behavioral problem of the junior high students, the open communication with parents was identified as having an effective influence on the conflict resolution strategy between friends and particularly, more on compromising and cooperating strategies. For depression and behavioral problem of the youth, as it appeared that dysfunctional communication with parents had large effects so it presented that positive and not one-way, but mutual open communication is very important for intervention measures to depression and behavioral problem of the youth
As this study has looked into the effects of the interactive parents-child communication on the conflict resolution strategy between friends, depression and behavioral problem of youth by separating them into different forms, it is expected that this study may be helpful in building and sustaining friendships as an effective strategy for the conflict resolution between friends and may be also quite helpful for family counseling, parents education focusing on the improvement of pattern to have communication with parents in the field of counseling and psychological therapy for youth.
