The purpose of this study is to find out how Taekwondo training during the childhood affects the child's emotional development and self-admiration.
The research was conducted because the training during the childhood, in which children have enormous curiosity and adventurous spirit, is effective as children quickly learn new materials and develop their characters.
The survey was done on 660 children living in Seoul or nearby areas. The subjects of the survey are consisted of two groups of children: Children who have never been on Taekwondo training centers, and the ones that are getting trained. To describe the survey method, children were first told about the purpose of the survey, and they each filled out the survey according to the self-administration method.
In order to deeply analyze the Taekwondo's effect on the childhood emotional developments and self-admiration, frequency analysis was used to figure out the socio-demographics.
To identify the variance of the Taekwondo's effect on the childhood emotional developments and self-admiration, Independent samples t-test and One-way ANOVA were also used. To reach the purpose of the research, survey was conducted to prove the hypothesis set after seeking the research models, then the statistical analysis was used to get a full grasp of the survey results.
To briefly describe about the steps that were taken during the statistical analysis, SPSS Ver.15.0 program was mainly used to prove the hypothesis and do the data coding. The followings are the results that were driven after using the program.
First, there seem to be no clear distinction between male and female regarding the effects of Taekwondo on children's emotional developments. However, girls tended to show higher rate on "assault response sentiment"than boys, and boys tended to show higher rate on "affection response sentiment" and "fear response sentiment" than girls.
Second, different age groups of respondents tended to show different emotional developments, especially in those of "affection response sentiment" and "social response sentiment." The statistical analysis also showed that the elementary third grade students tended to show the lowest emotional developments among all different age groups.
Third, when comparing the responses of two different groups (those who got trained and those who did not get a chance to get trained), those who got trained showed higher rate on the "fear response sentiment" than those who did not get trained.
Forth, one's self-admiration that came after one getting trained, showed the lowest score from those who did not get trained.
Fifth, the results of the self admiration depending on the sex showed that, the boys tended to get higher scores on the "physical pride," "social pride,"and "recognition pride,"while the girls scored high on "emotional pride" and the "future oriented self esteem."
Sixth, the self esteem scores among different age groups were clearly different, especially regarding the "social pride." The results showed that the six-graders got the highest scores on the physical pride, while the 4th graders and the 6th graders scored higher than the third and the fifth with respect to the social pride.
Seventh, children also showed different amount of self-esteem, depending on whether they got trained or not. Children who learned Taekwondo, scored high one "social pride" and "recognition pride," while those who never got trained score high on the "emotional development."
In conclusion, Taekwondo training tended to show positive effects on the childhood emotional developments and self-admiration; children who got trained were able to develop themselves physically, emotionally and their future-oriented self esteem also increased by far.
Also, the children who received training for longer time than the others tended to do better on the emotional development and self-admiration.
It seems reasonable that the society as a whole change its knowledge that Taekwondo training is not for children who go to the elementary school. People should have in mind that the training is also good for adolescents.
Especially, it is necessary that the local communities, private institutions, and the nation as a whole try to develop Taekwondo training program that would help children go through healthy childhoods. On top of that, it is recommended that Taekwondo training leaders make an attempt to develop good programs as well as to set good examples to children, in order to activate the training program within the society. The society as a whole should also lessen biases regarding Taekwondo as soon as possible.
