This study is to restore behaviors of Palaeolithic man through identifying structure of Jingeuneul Site at Jinan County. It includes clusters of stone artefacts, raw material, same core assemblage, refitted lithic artefacts and artefact as basic elements to identify site structures and presents organized concepts and a research method.
Specifically, it examines artefacts, raw materials, refitted lithic artefacts and spatial distribution of artefacts to apply for Jingeuneul Site. Artefacts are divided into two and excavated with a use of the point where artefacts were not found in the bottom of the Jingeuneul Site as a boundary.
The points where artefacts were intensively excavated were Seokgiguns which were named Seokgigun 1 and Seokgigun 2.
The artefacts excavated from each Seokgigun can be categorized according to kinds of raw materials, and for 1,381 artefacts excavated from Seokgigun 1, except artefacts whose raw materials can not be clearly classified, 833(64%) were classified according to 50 raw materials. 1,235 artefacts were excavated from Seokgigun 2 , of which 787 (64%) were classified according to 21 sets of raw materials. The raw materials which were repetitively found in both groups were two sets, a total of 62.
The number of refitted lithic artefacts excavated from Seokgigun 1 and 2 was 596 (130sets) and 23% of the total artefacts.
In each raw material, composition of artefacts was diversified. According to core inclusion, it was classified into group Ⅰ and group Ⅱ, and the one with hammerstone was classified as group Ⅲ . Group Ⅰ and Ⅱ were sub-classified into 1 and 2 according to blades, which were sub-classified into a, b, c and d according to rejuvenation flake and crested blade in the process of retouch to use core effectively, and tools.
Meanwhile, it was patterned according to how much raw materials were used effectively . Group Ⅰ was simple and expedient, Group Ⅱ was curated.
This study divides the space of the bottom through assemblage and spatial distribution of refitted lithic artefacts and raw materials, and assumes behaviors of Palaeolithic man to guess the reason why each space was remained. It confirmed that the natures of Seokgigun 1 and 2 are different and Seokgigun 1 was formed as a result of two different behaviors.
This study decides that the difference between groups was come from difference between groups who produced artefacts, and creates Group 1, Group 2 and Group 3.
It is estimated that the period of each Group was before and after 22,850±350B.P in consideration of the upper Palaeolithic chronology and hearth excavated at Seokgigun 2 .
This study aims at structural analysis of the bottom of Jingeuneul Site. However, as there have been few research on it in Korea, this study can present methodology, but it has limitations.
The first problem is a matter of terms. This study suggests the terms of Seokgigun and raw materials (Moam) and use them tentatively, but they are not clearly used in this study. More specific and incorporated terms should be developed.
Second is a methodology. There are some sites whose Seokgigun classification is easy, but many whose classification is not clear. So, objectivity should be considered in classification of Seokgigun. If Seokgigun is classified in wrong way, it may cause wrong results and wrong understanding of culture which is a serious error. Classification of raw materials requires much care. As raw materials can not be sharply divided, artefacts restored as refitted lithic artefacts do not have any problem, but if not, much care should be paid to the standard of classification.
