Focusing on variables related to the marriage attitude, this research aimed to support people's understanding of attitude towards marriage through how th parent's marital conflict recognized by their children and attachment to the parents affect on college students' romantic relationship with opposite sex.
Subjects of the study consist of 527 college students in total(male 282, female 245). Marital conflict questionnaire, parental attachment questionnaire, opposite sex relationship attitude questionnaire and marriage attitudes questionnaire were used as the measurement. Correlation analysis, T-test, F-test and Tukey post-hoc were conducted using SPSS 12.0 to analyze the data. Also, AMOS 5.0 was used for path analysis to examine the theoretical model that was suggested.
The results of this study were as follows:
First, the result indicates that there were significant differences in attitudes towards both romantic relationship with opposite sex and marriage. That is, male students have more positive attitudes than those of female students.
Seconds, parent's marital conflict and attachment to mother and father influence differently on romantic relationship with opposite sex. In other words, male students were affected directly by parent's marital conflict and attachment to father in their romantic relationship with opposite sex while female students were only influenced by the former.
Third, there were considerable differences in each gender's marriage attitude building affected by parent's marital conflict, attachment to mother and father and opposite sex relationship attitude. For male students, as the parent's marital conflict and attachment to father influence of their relationship with opposite gender, the attitude of male students opposite gender relationship mediates their marriage attitude. Also, it seemed that attachment to mother and the opposite gender relationship attitude affects directly on female students' marriage attitude building. As parent's marital conflict directly influence on female students' opposite sex relationship attitude, opposite sex relationship attitude mediates between parent's marital conflicts and marriage attitude building.
Therefore, it could be said that romantic relationship with opposite sex mediates between parent's marital conflict and attachment to parents and marriage attitude building.
Based on the result of the study, there should be an education program that helps people build a healthy attitudes towards not only a romantic relationship with opposite sex bet also marriage providing guidelines and the father's should be encouraged, Also, this study implies that the program for parents that solve parent's marital conflict for their children's healthy relationship with opposite sex and another program that premarital program for the students to support them have positive attitude towards marriage.
