Although Korea has an increasingly close sociocultural relationship with Japan in today's globalization era partly due to the influence of the Korean Wave, there are lasting historical and political conflicts between the two at the same time. The purpose of this study was to examine the mutual awareness of Korean and Japanese elementary schoolers and the impact of school-based international exchange on their way of looking at each other. It's ultimately meant to spread awareness of the effects of international exchange as a way to change their mutual view, since just being exposed to a limited amount of information is likely to make Korean and Japanese people view each other in a very simple and unfavorable manner.
The subjects in this study were 30 students at G elementary school located in Seoul and 30 students in K elementary school located in Japan, which shared international exchange activities for five years. After a survey was conducted, the collected data were analyzed with a SPSS 13.0 program. Statistical data on frequency and percentage were obtained, and crosstabs and Chi-square test were utilized to look for any possible gaps in their perception. In the event of the items using interval scale, t-test was employed.
The findings of the study were as follows:
First, there were three different types of international exchange programs implemented by the schools: pre-programs, main programs and post-programs. And the programs consisted of language education, interchange of letters, education of one's own culture, education of the foreign culture and home-stay experience. In every activity, every student was urged to make friends to ensure a perfect one-on-one interchange, and that made it possible for the students to make an individual interchange with one another irrespective of nationality.
Second, as a result of checking any possible changes in the way Korean students looked at Japan, they appeared to take a strong dismal view of Japan and Japanese people under the great influence of historical and political conflicts between the two countries before they participated in the international exchange programs. And they got emotional when they chose particular vocabularies to describe Japan. After the programs were provided, however, they evaluated Japanese people in a more objective and positive manner owing to interchange experiences with their Japanese friends, and they eventually got to view Japan more favorably.
Third, as for changes in the perception of the Japanese elementary schoolers about Korea, they just had a limited knowledge on Korea and didn't show a lot of interest before the international exchange programs were offered. But they got interested in Korea and looked at Koreans in a more favorable manner after they participated in the programs.
The above-mentioned findings suggested that international exchange activities provide an opportunity for people of different countries that suffer lasting deep-rooted mutual conflicts to gather individual and diverse information on each other, and that the activities eventually serve as a chance to change the way of looking at each other.
