The advance in the Internet and all sorts of visual media has made regional information around the world more accessible, and there is consequently a growing concern for ethnic Koreans overseas. Specifically, information on the emigration history of ethnic Koreans who were forced to emigrate into Central Asia and Russia is drawing attention.
The purpose of this study was to examine online Internet materials in a bid to explore the identity of ethnic Koreans forced to emigrate into Central Asia and the current meaning of their identity. And it's also meant to discuss the most integral constituent of their ethnic identity, and to take a closer look at their identity by dividing it into objective identity and subjective one, which was as unique as their wretched historical, cultural and geographic situations.
The identity of the ethnic Koreans was investigated largely from two different perspectives. One was identity from an objective standpoint, which is called sociopsychological identity or collective identity. The other was identity from a subjective viewpoint, which could be said as individual identity. The subjective identity was discussed in terms of three: psychological identification(a sense of unity), independence(pride) and durability(a will to inherit).
And this study was implemented in two different manners:
First, a variety of online Internet materials were analyzed to determine the identity of the ethnic Koreans who were dispersed all over the vast region.
Second, some of them were interviewed in person, and additional interview data were gathered to make up for the online materials.
The findings of the study were as follows:
First, the emigrants took great pride in their native country. They yearned for Korea with pride especially when they heard about the splendid development of the nation. And they got to be conscious of their root and were eager to find their root in the midst of confusion and wandering.
Second, they had a strong attachment for the nation. As a matter of fact, it's not easy to find something similar to the attributes of Korea in the Russianized ethnic Koreans who had long been emigrated into Central Asia. Nonetheless, they continued to be closely attached to their native country. As for the reason, they were all the time differentiated from others as a minority race that was called Koreans, and it seemed that they were eventually bound to have a strong self-consciousness as Koreans. Their attachment was gradually on the wane as the new generations came out, but they apparently continued to be closely attached to their native country at the same time.
Third, there was identity of blood. As they say that blood is thicker than water, the identity of blood was found in the ethnic Koreans. In fact, they were supposed to be Russianized while they lived in the alien land for a long time, but there was unique Korean sentiment in their heart. Namely, they had a strong sense of belonging to Korea.
Fourth, there was a strong vitality. The ethnic Koreans had to withstand hardships for no reason, being swayed by the interest of the great powers of the world and treated poorly as if they just had been weeds. Weeds are usually trampled to death without being noticed by anybody, but the ethnic Koreans had a strong hold on life, overcoming all the hardships against all odds. Their strong vitality sometimes turned into unique Korean sentiment called 'Han.'
Fifth, there was a third identity. The lives of the ethnic Koreans that were full of ups and downs should not merely be viewed as something vain or unfortunate. They looked fragile but created an invisible history of their own. Their identity could be defined as a third identity in that they built a unique, new identity of their own into which Korean things and Russian things were incorporated. They should be assisted to maintain their unique identity instead of just trying to turn them into Koreans.
Overall, the identity of the ethnic Koreans could boil down to 'a strong pride and attachment for the native country,' and their attachment hinges on the relationship between them and Korea. It's needed to improve their lingering attachment for the native country in a more constructive manner. Korea should provide them with computers and the Internet access, and all sorts of programs should be provided in a move to offer a helping hand to them. Such active efforts to embrace the ethnic Koreans will contribute to furthering the national interest of Korea. The recovery of their identity is not a mere matter of their own. The government should make a more careful and far-reaching preparation for that as well as the unification of the South and North so that the ethnic Koreans and their future generations could make a contribution to the world in the 21st century as another self-conceited members of Korea without being plagued with faltering identity any more.
