Current discretional activity included in a regular curriculum of elementary school is performed by regular teachers on their discretion without a standard textbook. Thus it is limited to a software technical training in reality. Subsequently problems have been raised regarding the current computer education implemented in the actual school environment. Accordingly a programming class was conducted in a current discretionary activity time-slot for computer education by using Dolittle which enhances problem solving ability and creativity for the fifth graders in elementary school. Based on this experiment, a correlation between the programming class and problem solving ability, creativity, and interests in programming of children was examined to suggest an outlook for improving the current computer education.
Findings of this study showed that the programming class using Dolittle raised children's problem solving ability, creativity, and interests in programming more than the existing computer class did.
A further research should be made to devise study materials and methods including a complete Korean version of the Dolittle program, hence enabling the Dolittle program to be applied in the actual school environment. Moreover a further research should be made to introduce an educational programming. Although the necessity of an educational programming in programming education has been identified and educational potentials of such programs are currently studied in volume, there are difficulties yet in actually applying such programs. Thus a plan for an immediate introduction of the programs suitable for the current school environment should be made.
