    본 연구는 책 읽어주기 활동이 아동의 정서지능에 미치는 효과를 알아보는 데 그 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 다음과 같은 연구 문제들을 설정하였다.
    <연구문제 1> 책 읽어주기 활동은 아동의 정서지능에 효과가 있는가?
    위와 같은 연구문제를 검증하기 위해 서울특별시에 소재한 Y초등학교 2학년 2개 반을 선정하여 실험집단 31명, 통제집단 30명을 연구대상으로 하였다. 실험집단과 통제집단 모두 정서지능 사전검사를 실시하였고 사전 검사 후 실험집단은 매주 2~3회씩 6주에 걸쳐 16회의 책 읽어주기 활동을 실시한 후 통제집단과 함께 사후검사를 실시하였다. 측정도구로는 문용린(1997)이 Mayer와 Salovey의 정서지능의 초기 모형에 기초하여 개발하고 대교 교육과학연구소가 제작하여 표준화 과정을 거친 초등학교 저학년용 정서지능 검사를 사용하였다. 실험처치의 효과를 검증하기 위해 연구결과에 대한 통계 처리 및 분석은 SPSSWIN(version 15.0)을 이용하였다.
    실험처치의 효과를 검증하기 위한 분석결과는 다음과 같다.
    첫째, 책 읽어주기 활동은 아동의 정서지능의 하위영역인 정서인식 능력 향상에 유의미한 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다.
    둘째, 책 읽어주기 활동은 아동의 정서지능의 하위영역인 정서표현 능력 향상에 유의미한 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다.
    셋째, 책 읽어주기 활동은 아동의 정서지능의 하위영역인 감정이입 능력 향상에 유의미한 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다.
    넷째, 책 읽어주기 활동은 아동의 정서지능의 하위영역인 타인의 정서조절 능력을 제외한 자신의 정서조절 능력 향상에 유의미한 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다.
    이상의 연구 결과를 통하여 책 읽어주기 활동이 아동의 정서지능 향상에 효과가 있음이 검증되었다. 그러나 책 읽어주기 활동이 아동의 정서지능의 하위영역 중 타인의 정서조절 능력을 유의미하게 향상시키지는 못하였다. 따라서 타인의 정서조절 능력을 향상시키기 위해서는 또래관계 속에서 타인의 정서를 조절할 수 있는 기회를 가질 수 있는 보다 적극적인 활동이 보완될 필요가 있다.
    본 연구는 초등학교 저학년 시기에 책 읽어주기 활동을 실시하여 책 속의 여러 가지 정서를 간접적으로 경험하게 하고 친구들과 이야기 해보는 기회를 가지게 해 줌으로 정서지능을 향상시켜 원만한 인간관계 형성에 기여할 수 있음을 시사해 준다.

    이상의 연구 결과를 통하여 책 읽어주기 활동이 아동의 정서지능 향상에 효과가 있음이 검증되었다. 그러나 책 읽어주기 활동이 아동의 정서지능의 하위영역 중 타인의 정서조절 능력을 유의미하게 향상시키지는 못하였다. 따라서 타인의 정서조절 능력을 향상시키기 위해서는 또래관계 속에서 타인의 정서를 조절할 수 있는 기회를 가질 수 있는 보다 적극적인 활동이 보완될 필요가 있다.

    The purpose of this study was to investigate how the reading-aloud activity effect children's emotional intelligence. To achieve this purpose, the following research question was established.
    <Question 1> Does the reading-aloud activity improve children's emotional intelligence?
    To test the question above, two classes from the second grade in Y elementary school in Seoul were selected as subjects. The experimental group consisted of 31 children and the control group consisted of 30 children. Both groups took a pre-test for emotional intelligence. Following the pre-test, reading-aloud activities were conducted with the experimental group 16 times total, 2 to 3 times per week for six weeks, and then a post-test was given to both the experimental and the control group. The instrument used in this study was the emotional intelligence test for primary graders which was developed by Mun Yong Rin(1997) on the basis of Mayer & Salovey's Emotional Intelligence preliminary model, and later produced by Daegyo Education Science Institute after standardization process. SPSS WIN(version 15.0) was used for the statistical process and analysis of the study results.
    The results of this study were as follows;
    First, the reading-aloud activity had a positive influence on children's ability to perceive emotions, a sub-category of emotional intelligence.
    Second, the reading-aloud activity had a positive influence on children's ability to express emotions, a sub-category of emotional intelligence.
    Third, the reading-aloud activity had a positive influence on children's ability to empathize, a sub-category of emotional intelligence.
    Fourth, the reading-aloud activity had a positive influence on children's ability to control their own emotions only but not other people's, both a sub-category of emotional intelligence.
    This study showed the reading-aloud activity effectively improved children's emotional intelligence in all its subcategories except the subcategory of controlling other people's emotions. Thus, to improve children's ability to control other people's emotions, more aggressive approaches that give children opportunities to regulate other people's emotions seemed to be required.
    In conclusion, the reading-aloud activity, which provided 2nd grade children with opportunities to experience various emotions and to dialogue amongst themselves, improved children's emotional intelligence and helped them form successful personal relationships.
