This study was focused on analyzing how the story creating activities through masterpiece influenced young children's language expression ability and creativity, and providing the fundamental materials for the educational applications and the effective teaching methods.
The questions of this study are as follows;
1. How does the story creating activity through masterpiece have an effect on young children's language expression ability?
2. How does the story creating activity through masterpiece have an influence on young children's creativity?
For the case study, two classes were chosen in the kindergarten of S elementary school of Y province. There are forty children that are five years old. And they were divided into two groups. One was an experimental group of 20 young children, the other was a controll group of 20 young children.
In order to measure young children's language expression ability, "Language Ability Tests" by Jang Young-Ae(1981) was used. Also "TTCT(diagram)" by Kim Young-Chae(2002) who translated "Creative Thinking Faculty Tests by Torrance(1962)" into Korean was used for this study.
The process of this case study was made up of preliminary study, pre-test, experimental management, and post-test. At first, homogeneity between an experimental group and a controll group was shown through the preliminary study. And then, the story creating activities through masterpiece were done in an experimental group, while the imitating activities through masterpiece were done in a controlled group. Those kinds of activities were totally carried out eighteen times, namely, three times a week for six weeks. In the same way, the post-test was carried out.
The results of pre-test and post-test were analyzed on the basis of t-test by SPSS program.
The results of this study are as follows.
First, an important difference was shown between an experimental group and a controll group. Young children's language expression ability in an experimental group was attentively improved. And that, an experimental group got the better of a controlled group in "the amount of vocabulary", "the number of sentence", "consistence of contents", "connection of contents", and "creative expression" among the low-ranking cause of language expression ability.
Second, Creativity in an experimental group was more improved than a controlled group. Also, an experimental group got the better of a controlled group in "fluency", "originality'', "abstraction of subject", and "elaborateness" among the low-ranking cause of creativity.
As a result, this study showed that the story creating activities through masterpiece could improve young children's language expression ability and creativity. Therefore, it suggested that the story creating activity through masterpiece can be a meaningful teaching method in early childhood education so as to improve young children's language expression ability and creativity.
