The purpose of this research is to examine the effects of phonological activities through storybook on the young children’s phonological awareness and word recognition. Furthermore, if the activities are successful and meaningful, I would like to make an effective materials that can enhance the reading ability of young children. For the purpose of this research, the following research problems were selected:
1. What are the effects of the phonological activities in the storybook on young children’s phonological awareness?
2. What are the effects of the phonological activities in the storybook on young children’s word recognition?
As for the target objects of this study, fifty-two young children (27 boys, 25 girls) whose ages were full five from the Annexed Kindergarten to S Elementary School in Chullanam Province were selected as the experimental group (14 boys, 12 girls) and the control group (13 boys, 13 girls).
Experimental treatment was given two times a week for 6 weeks (a total of twelve times). Phonological activities through the storybook were carried out in the experimental group and language activities, based on ‘general life’subject matter, was carried out in the control group.
The instruments of the research were as follows:
The instruments used in this study were a examination tool that was made by Hong, Sung-In (2001) for the phonological awareness and word recognition of the young children. The Phonological awareness test is composed of discrimination task-omission and synthesized-and level task-words, syllables and phonemics. The word recognition test is composed of meaningful word recognition and meaningless word recognition tasks.
In order to compare the effect of phonological activities through the storybook and language activities between the two groups that is based on ‘general life’ subject matter, the collected pre-post test data were analyzed by using t- test with the SPSS tool.
The findings of this research were as follows:
First, the experimental group that experienced the storybook phonological activities showed a more meaningful and higher ability than the comparative group. From this state I knew that the young children’s phonological awareness of the young children’s experimental group had made progress.
Second, the experimental group’s word recognition ability was higher than that of the comparative group. From this result, word recognition of the young children’s experimental group had made progress.
All of these findings show that phonological activities through the storybook can be an effective way to improve the phonological recognition and word perception of young children.
As one of effective teaching and learning methods the phonological activities through the storybook used in the study can be applied to early childhood education settings.
