This research was ultimately planned to enhance the career decisionmaking self-efficacy and the learning motivation of junior high school students who are in period of investigating their future path. In order to do that this research required vocational cards classification for the students to explore the world of careers, understand themselves, and set a plan of their goal in order to raise their ability to make carrier decisions. Through the process, by making and applying the career group counseling program using vocational cards, I would like to find out the effect of the program to the career decision-making efficacy and the learning motivation.
Followings are the main questions of this research selected to achieve the goal.
First of all, how does group counseling using vocational cards affect the career decision-making self-efficacy of a middle school girl?
Second, how does group counseling using vocational cards affect the learning motivation of a middle school girl?
The objects of this study are 24 students of a girl’s middle school placed in Mapo-gu, Seoul. A class of 1st graders was chosen to be the controlled group. The counseling using the vocational cards took place 7 times for the experimental group while nothing happened to the controlled group.
The program is consisted of orientation, making nick names, investigating the information of careers, knowing the interest on careers, finding out the Holland types of each individuals, making rational career-decisions, making future plans, rating and conclusion. It was progressed in four steps; presentinig the studying goal and motivating, making the data of the activity, discussion and presentation, and conclusion.
The research tools used in this study are the summerized version of career decision-making self-efficacy scale(CDMSES-SF) made by Taylor and Betz in 1983, summerized by Betz, Klein, and Taylor in 1996, and later modified by Lee, Eun Kyoung in 2001 and the learning motivation scale consisted of 25 problems made by Kim, yong Rai in 2000.
After gathering data from a preliminary and post inspection on career decision-making efficacy and learning motivation, the paired sample t test given by SPSS WIN 15.0 was used to calculate the average and standard deviation and know whether they have significance.
In summary, the result of this result is as follows.
First of all, career counseling using vocational cards has significant effect in enhancing the career decision-making efficacy of a student in every aspect (p < .001). In the detailed part, the counseling affects the object selection, career information, problem solving, future planning of the career decisionmaking efficacy in that the t-test indicates that the data gathered before and after the counseling differs significantly in those parts (p < .001).
Second, career counseling using vocational cards has significant effect in enhancing learning motivation scale of a student in every aspect (p < .001). In the detailed part, the counseling had significant effect on lessons’ motivation, continuing motivation, internal motivation and external motivation in that the t-test indicates that the data gathered before and after the counseling differs significantly in those parts (p < .001).
