This experimental study attempts to verify the effects of integrated activities through wordless picture books on infants' development of creativity and language capacity.
There are 25 subjects in this experimental study. They belong to nursery of Jin ju national university, and composed of 14 infants(experimental group) and 11 infants(control group). The sample of each group was selected randomly. The average age of infants is 4 years and 8 months. The experimental group infants were educated with integrated activities through wordless picture books according to researcher's plan. Integrated activities are composed of story making, succeeding stories, oral narration. The control group infants were educated with nursery's ordinary education program. The experimental periods are 12 weeks and 12 times.
The scales for measuring infants' creativity are K-CCTYC developed by Jeon Gyeong Won in 1999. They are composed of two kinds of scales, pre-test and post-test scales. The scales for measuring infants' language capacity are vocabulary test scales(developed by Lee Yeon Seop in 1981), expression test scales(developed by Jo Gyeong MI in 1984), and comprehension & cognition test scales(developed by Jang Hye Seong et al. in 1992).
The research hypotheses of the study were tested by the experimental outputs. The results are the followings.
First, the research question is whether integrated activities through wordless picture books influence on infants' development of creativity? The experimental group's mean of creativity increased by 8.41, from in pre-test to post-test, while control group's mean of creativity increased by 5.76. It was significantly statistically. Therefore, we found that integrated activities through wordless picture books influenced on infants' development of creativity.
Second, the second research question is whether the age of the subjects influences on infants' development of creativity by integrated activities through wordless picture books? The 5 years group's mean of creativity increased by 10.43, from in pre-test to post-test, while 4 years group's mean of creativity increased by 7.40. The difference of two group's mean is considerable, but is not significant statically.
Third, the third research question is whether integrated activities through wordless picture books influence on infants' development of language capacity? The experimental group's mean of development of language capacity increased by 4.41, from in pre-test to post-test, while control group's mean of creativity increased by 1.76. It was significantly statistically. Therefore, we found that integrated activities through wordless picture books influenced on infants' development of language capacity.
Fourth, the fourth research question is whether the age of the subjects influences on infants' development of language capacity by integrated activities through wordless picture books? The 5 years group's mean of creativity increased by 4.75, from in pre-test to post-test, while 4 years group's mean of creativity increased by 4.25. The difference of two group's mean is very narrow, and is not significant statically.
When we try to synthesize up results, though the age of the subjects didn't influence on development of creativity by integrated activities through wordless picture books, integrated activities through wordless picture books influenced on infants' development of creativity and language capacity.
Therefore, integrated activities through wordless picture books should be encouraged in every fields of infants education, home or nursery for advancing their developments of creativity and language capacity.
