The primary purpose of this study is to trace the various kinds of child abuses on his behavior problems and peer relationships, then to prepare the basis which can be contributed to the development of child's peer relationship.
The data for this study were collected from 392 students(5th and 6th year) of 3 primary schools in Jeon-Buk Province and they were analyzed by descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, correlative analysis, and multiple regression analysis.
The major results of this study are as follow:
First, meaningful aggression behavior, withdrawal and the difference of peer relationship are shown in different groups which have no experience in child abuse, one experience, two experiences and three experiences. In other words, the more experience in child abuse, the more aggression behavior and withdrawal are and the quality of peer relationship is low standard. In group of experiencing only one abuse, that is, group of experiencing only physical abuse, only emotional abuse, only neglect, there is no aggression behavior and withdrawal but there is meaningful difference in peer relationship between groups. Also the quality of peer relationship of only experiencing physical child abuse is higher than those of experiencing neglect. In group of experiencing two abuses, there is no different aggression behavior, withdrawal and quality in peer relationship.
Second, the degree of experiencing abuse has an effect on aggression behavior, withdrawal and quality of peer relationship, so it is certain that the more serious experience in child abuse, the more aggression behavior and withdrawal are, the lower the quality of peer relationship. Especially among many kinds of abuses, what is related to aggression behavior is emotional abuse and neglect, what is related to withdrawal is also emotional abuse. On the other hand, what is related to peer relationship is physical abuse and neglect.
Third, As a result of making sure that experiencing child abuse can influence the quality, physical abuses have negative characteristics in positive elements in peer relationship such as 'emotional, social support', 'popularity', 'satisfaction of peer relationship', while neglects are negative in 'troubles and opposition', 'one-sided hegemony', 'withdrawal and isolation', 'disregard' and emotional abuses are negative in 'disregard'.
To sum up, experiencing child abuse noy only increase aggression behavior and withdrawal but influence quality of peer relationship. In three major types, physical abuse can decrease positive elements of peer relationship, emotional abuse can increase aggression behavior and withdrawal and neglect can increase negative elements of aggression behavior and peer relationship.
The significances of this study are as follow:
First, the scopes of study in experiencing child abuse and peer relationship are widened by studying the quality of peer relationship which was not considered before and the influence which various experiencing child abuse can have on the lower quality.
Second, this study shows not only child abuse can have an negative influence on behavior problems and peer relationship but emotional problems and neglect which were not considered seriously before in comparison with physical abuses can have negative influence on them.
