The purpose of this study were to investigate the causal relationships among interparental conflict, parent-adolescent communication, adolescent's social anxiety, and adolescent's depression by structural equation modeling.
The Subjects were 421 first, second, and third graders of middle schools in Daegu. To measure of the intertparental conflict, Children's Perception of Interparental Conflict(Grych, Seid, & Finacham, 1992) was revised and used. To measure of the parent-adolescent communication, Parent-Adolescent Communication Inventory(Barnes & Olson, 1982) was used. Adolescent's social anxiety was measured by Social Anxiety Scale for Adolescents(La Greca & Stone, 1993). And adolescent's depression was measured by Children's Depression Inventory(Kovacs, 1981). The data were analyzed by factor analysis, descriptive statistics, Pearson correlations, and structural equation modeling, using SPSS 12.0 and AMOS 5.0.
The major results were as follows:
First, interparental conflict had a direct effect on the parent-adolescent communication.
Second, interparental conflict had a direct effect on the adolescent's social anxiety.
Third, interparental conflict had no direct effect on the adolescent's depression.
Fourth, parent-adolescent communication had a direct effect on the adolescent's social anxiety.
Fifth, parent-adolescent communication had a direct effect on the adolescent's depression.
Sixth, adolescent's social anxiety had a direct effect on the adolescent's depression.
Seventh, interparental conflict had an indirect effect on the adolescent's social anxiety through the parent-adolescent communication.
Eighth, interparental conflict had an indirect effect on the adolescent's depression through the parent-adolescent communication.
Ninth, interparental conflict had an indirect effect on the adolescent's depression through the adolescent's social anxiety.
