This study set out to apply group game play therapy to depressed children, investigate its impacts on their depression and life satisfaction, and provide data to help apply programs of group game play therapy in the field.
In the study, the following research questions were addressed.
[Research Question 1] Is there any significant difference within the experiment and control group in depression and life satisfaction after group game play therapy?
[Research Question 2] Is there any significant difference between the experiment and control group in depression and life satisfaction?
Among the fourth graders attending S Elementary School in Incheon Metropolitan City, 16 depressed children were sampled and divided into the experiment and control group each of which consisted of eight children. The former group participated in group game play therapy twice a week over four weeks. Total eight sessions were given each of which lasted 60 minutes. The research tools employed in the study include Children's Depression Inventory(CDI), the Korean version of Multidimensional Students' Life Satisfaction Scale(K-MSLSS), and Sentence Completion Test(SCT). The pre- and post-test results were statistically treated in Wilcoxon matched-pairs signed rank test and Mann-Whitney U test using the SPSS WIN 12.0 program. Each session the program's progress was observed and recorded, and the records were later transcribed and analyzed to understand the children's behavioral changes. The pre- and post-SCT results were also analyzed in the subareas of life satisfaction, which were ego, family, friends, and school, for any changes.
The major findings of the study were as follows:
First, the depression level of the experiment group significantly dropped, which means that the program of group game play therapy was effective in reducing children's depression. Among the subareas of depression, depressed feelings and behavioral problems showed a significant decrease. In addition, positive changes were also observed in the children's behavior during the sessions.
Secondly, the life satisfaction level of the experiment group significantly increased, as well, which suggests that the program of group game play therapy was effective in improving children's life satisfaction. Only ego of life satisfaction's subareas showed a significant increase. The changes observed in the SCT results indicate that the children of the experiment group discovered positive things in themselves and paid more attention to them.
And finally, there was no significant difference between the experiment and control group in depression and life satisfaction after therapy. The eight-session program caused positive changes to the former group, but the research period was too short for them to continue in a stable manner. In addition, the number of the students was small, and the experiment group decreased in depression and increased in life satisfaction in general. However, some children of the control group also demonstrated small positive changes in certain areas of the post-test, which had huge impacts on the results and made it difficult to test the program's effects statistically.
In short, the study proved that the program of group game play therapy had positive impacts on decreasing the depressed children's depression and increasing their life satisfaction. There is serious shortage of programs to help improve children's overall life satisfaction in Korea. The study results show that a program of group game play therapy can help enhance the overall life satisfaction of children. Finally, the subject children didn't have clinically serious depression. The study finds its significance in that it suggested a preventive therapy intervention to prevent children's depression from deteriorating to a serious state.
