This study defined speaking that elementary school students engaged in during debate class as debate dialogues and explored the structures and strategies of dialogues by analyzing dialogues. Each chapter carried the following discussions:
Chapter II reviewed the characteristics and educational meanings of debate dialogues, which fell into the category of task-oriented dialogues according to the dialogue types of dialogue grammar and were regarded as cooperative cognitive dialogues. Their educational meanings include reviewing the topic from various perspectives, making preparations for logical arguments, and improving communication skills in the process of dialogue. In elementary school, more emphasis should be placed on the dialogue aspects to help the students enhance their communication skills or critical thinking than forms and procedures.
The goals of debate dialogues are two-pronged according to the major functions and auxiliary functions. In the stage of the major functions, the goal of debate dialogues is to solve problems about the topic. And in the stage of the auxiliary functions where the teachers usually do the talking, the goal concerns the teaching and learning strategies for speaking and listening.
In the study, the strategies of debate dialogues were defined as a comprehensive concept in the sense of smooth communication and speaking process. Since communication and speaking pursue both the objectives of speech acts and the relational objectives, the investigator divided the strategies for the objectives of speech acts into content organization and expression and delivery and those for the relational objectives according to formation of relations.
In Chapter III, I suggested research methods and procedures and collected data from the fourth and fifth graders in the school I was teaching. I participated in debate dialogues among them during speaking and listening class and recorded them with a camcorder. And the collected data were analyzed in dialogue analysis of "dialogue grammar."
In Chapter IV, I analyzed the elementary school students' debate dialogues in terms of structure and strategy. As for the characteristics of the progress structure of their debate dialogues, they focused on the speech of the previous speaker in expressing their opinions and refuted only the speech of the previous speaker, which made the debates unproductive and boring.
In a debate dialogue, a variety of dialogue movement sequences occur, and they were examined in terms of the teachers and the students, the mediator and debaters, and the debaters and their fellow debaters.
The dialogues between the teachers and the students were in the structure of "beginning+agreement" and usually took place in the preparation and wrapup stage, making rare appearances in other stages, too, for the smooth progress of debate. Those between the mediator and the debaters took the structure of "beginning+reactions" as the mediator induces the debaters to speak, repeats the arguments of the previous speaker, or does simple speech like checking one's intention. As a result, there can't be dialogue movements of denial or unspecific reverse beginning with the secondary dialogue movements. Finally, the dialogues between the debaters and their fellow debaters have relatively various structures, which include "beginning+denial," "beginning+unspecific reaction+unspecific reaction+restart" and "beginning+reverse beginning+restart+restart."
Dialogue movements consist of speeches that are a smaller unit and perform special functions in the structure of speech sequence that's a bigger unit. In order to analyze how the functions of dialogue movement that's the smallest unit would be performed, I divided them into arguments and objections and examined the structure of speech acts usually used by the debaters.
In the dialogue movement of arguments, the elementary school students used arguments for the major speech act and grounds, additional explanations, repetition, and specification for the auxiliary speech act. In the major speech act, they would often replace arguments with alternatives. In objections, they began a speech act with preliminary announcement and usually used such major speech acts as citing an argument or raising an objection. They would also omit major speech acts or repeated and added major speech acts to emphasize their speech.
In a debate dialogue, the debaters express their own opinions and positions, raise objections against and challenge the arguments of their fellow debaters, and use diverse strategies. In terms of content organization, they used such strategies as contents of experience, contents that lacked truth as grounds, contents to supplement their friends' opinions, contents that are aside from the topic, contents of citations, and contents of the repetition of the same arguments. In terms of expression, they used such strategies as reading what they prepared, repeating, asking questions, and refuting. And in terms of formation of relations, they used such strategies as agreeing on the opponent's argument, suggesting, compromising, inducing laughter, and making indirect arguments.
The study examined the structures and strategies of dialogues based on the characteristics of elementary school students' speaking in debate discourse. Its significance can be found in that it provides basic data for the instruction of speaking processes and strategies to elementary school students during actual class.
