The purpose of this study is to develop and validate the effect that a group counseling program influences anger expression abilities and emotional intelligence of elementary school students. Study questions to achieve the above purpose are as follows: what will be included in the group counseling program, how will it effect anger expression abilities as well as emotional intelligence of elementary school students.
The subjects used in this study are 2 classes of grade 5 students in ChungBuk. One class is the sample group and the other class is the control group.
The group counseling program to enhance anger expression ability and emotional intelligence is designed based on the counseling program development model of Park, In-Woo(1995). 'Emotional Intelligence Training Program' of Shin, Hyeon-Jeong(2006) and Kim, Mi-Seon(2006), 'Anger Management Program' of Park, Yun-Ah(2007) and Seo, Mi-Hwa(2002), 'Self-assertion Training' of Goh, Hye-Young(2005), 'Forgiveness Counseling Program' of Ha, Yo-Sang(2006) and Kim, Gwang-Su(2008), 'Boosting EQ for a healthy life' of Kim, Young-hee(2008), 'Gestalt Psychology Therapy' of Kim, Jeong-gyu(1995), 'Crying Fist to declare freedom (KBS 2TV rights)' were also referenced and modified to fit the purpose of this program.
‘Anger Expression Ability Test’ produced by Spielberger and modified by Kim, baek-Young(1997) and 'Emotional Intelligence Test' produced by Mun, Yong-Rin are used as a testing tools. The statistical results were analyzed by Mixed ANOVA at SPSS/Window 12 as data processing, and the session experimental report and counseling contents were analyzed and submitted in order to supplement the limit for reliability of quantitative results.
The results from this research shows that there is a significant difference between the sample group and the control group. Also, there is a positive effect for anger management and emotional ability from the group counseling program because the sample participants showed positive reaction for the effect of the program in content analysis.
This research suggests that it tries to prevent anger problems by enhancing emotional abilities of elementary school students and presents practical methods which can be used by a teacher.
From above the results, suggestions for following studies are as follows. First, it is necessary to study ways of boosting sophisticated structures and interactions to minimize difficulties when controlling the class. Second, regulations about the number of sessions and time is required. Finally, we can see a more meaningful difference if we verify the effect by organizing programs through selecting sub-factors rather than dealing with all areas of emotional intelligence.
