This study aims to verify how the development and execution of the conflict resolution-oriented school violence prevention program for lower grade elementary school students affects their attitudes towards school violence and conflict resolution strategies. Research questions set to achieve the study goal are as below. First, how should the content elements and counseling activities are organized Second, how does the program have influence on preventing the school violence of elementary school students Third, how does the program affect the improvement of the students’ eclectic and cooperative conflict resolution strategies
The object of study is two classes' students of second-grade at one elementary school in Daejeon metropolitan city.
The Development of conflict-resolution-oriented school violence prevent program using role play for lower grade elementary school students was designed on the basis of a counseling program development model by Park, In-Woo (1995). Also, ‘The effect of an Empathy-based Group training Program on the Prosocial Behavior of Elementary School children’ of Im, Jung(2005), ‘School counseling Program’ of Kang, Jin-Ryung, Yu, Hyeong-Keun(2004), ‘Cooperative learning program’ of Miguel Kagan., etc.(2007), Program of Samsung life Public Welfare Foundation for elementary students(2006), Program of Korean Educational Development Institute(2007), Program of Jang, Geum-Soon(2005), 'Ready-to-Use for Elementary Students Conflict-Resolution Activities' of Beth Teolis(2005), Conflict-Resolution Policies of Korean Youth Development(2004) complemented and utilized for the purpose of this program.
This article used for pre- and post-examinations two kinds of testing tools: Jang Geum-sun’s ‘Testing for Attitudes towards School Violence’ and Pak Ok-cheol`s ‘Testing for Conflict Resolution Strategies.' The statistical results are analyzed by Mixed ANOVA at SPSS/Window 12 as data processing, and a session experimental report and the counseling contents are analyzed and submitted in order to supplement the limit for reliability of quantitative result.
The chief results of this research are as follows. First, it was shown that there was a significant difference in the attitudes toward school violence of the experimental group that had participated in the conflict resolution-oriented school violence prevention program using role play. Second, the strategies of the experimental group’s positive conflict resolution showed significant differences. And, content analysis showed that the group members who had participated in the program responded positively on the program’s effect; therefore, it can be seen that the conflict resolution-oriented school violence prevention program using role play is effective in fostering positive attitudes of lower grade elementary school students’ towards the prevention of school violence.
The importance of this study is to develop a conflict resolution-oriented program targeting the prevention of school violence, which mainly uses role play with the subject of lower grade elementary school students.
Through above result, the suggestions for following study are as follows. First, since the variables like attitudes towards school violence or conflict resolution strategies are formed and maintained over a long period, long-term and longitudinal studies should be necessarily performed. Second, families, schools, and society should be associated to apply the program for school violence prevention. In particular, it will be needed to grope for ways to include parents’ participation when programs targeting lower grade elementary school students are developed afterwards.
