The purpose of this study is to develop the evaluation tool for teachers that assess the self-leadership of the young children.
The established study issues are as follow.
1. How can the self-leadership evaluation tool for the young children be organized?
2. How are the reliability, validity and item-validity of the self-leadership evaluation tool for the young children?
2-1. How is the reliability of self-leadership evaluation tool for the young children?
2-2. How is the validity of self-leadership evaluation tool for the young children?
2-3. How is the item-validity of the self-leadership evaluation tool for the young children?
In this study, previous studies were examined to develop the self-leadership evaluation tool for the young children and a survey was conducted to the graduate students majoring in the early childhood education regarding their basic recognition about the leadership. Based on the results, the standard for the self-leadership evaluation tool for the young childrens was devised and draft items were developed. The validity of the draft items was verified by two times of validity examination and the verified survey paper was verified of its reliability, validity and item-validity by 322 young children age of five in preschool educational institutes located within Gangwon-do.
The study results are as follow.
1. How can the self-leadership evaluation tool for the young children be organized?
The self-leadership evaluation tool for the toddlers is a survey paper comprising of three components, seven sub-categories and total of thirty questions. The evaluation tool was designed for the teachers to evaluate the self-leadership of the young children and it comprises of four-point Likert scale.
2. How are the reliability, validity and item-validity of the self-leadership evaluation tool for the young children?
First, the total reliability of the self-leadership evaluation tool for the young children was high with the value of .928. By each component, the behavioral strategy was .867, compensation strategy was .881 and thinking strategy was .877 with verified reliability.
Second, the validity was examined by the convergent validity and the concurrent validity.
According to the results of examining the correlation coefficient between the total score of self-leadership evaluation tool for the young children and its sub-sectors, the behavioral strategy was r=.943, compensation strategy was r=.943 and thinking strategy was r=.893 (p<.01). Also, the correlation between each sector and the total score was high (Behavioral strategy r=.943, compensation strategy r=.848, thinking strategy r=.893) and the correlation between each sector was relatively low(Between behavioral strategy and compensation strategy r=.694, between compensation strategy and thinking strategy r=.672). It indicates that each component is comprised of discriminating and proper elements capable of measuring the self-leadership of the young children.
In order to examine the concurrent validity, the correlation between the tool and self-leadership behavioral checklist for the young children(Lee, Myeong-Sook, 2006) was examined. As a result, the total correlation between the self-leadership evaluation tool and self-leadership behavioral checklist for the toddlers was high with value of r=.799. The self-management was r=.775, natural compensation was r=.290 and constructive thinking was r=.716.
Third, the item-validity of the self-leadership evaluation tool was examined by the item response distribution and item discrimination.
According to the results of examining the item response distribution, most of the items demonstrated positive distribution. According to the results of conducting an independent sample t-test on the difference between the average scores of the young childrens at highest and lowest 30.1% in order to examine the item discrimination, the upper group had higher scores than the lower group in all the items. It had significant difference by the groups, which verified the validity of the items.
