The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of attention concentration training program on attention deficit hyperactivity disordered children's learning attitude and mathematics academic achievement. This study was conducted with 20 children sorted as attention deficit hyperactivity disordered children out of the 2nd to 5th grade students in S elementary school, applied to pre-post test control group design.
Attention concentration training program was reorganized to correspond to the purpose of this study after analyzing the pilot study, and the elements are selective attention, sustained attention, attention shift, attention to the continued task, and problem solving skill. Attention concentration training program used the 4 tasks such as discrimination, coordination, memory and problem solving skill to achieve these 5 elements. Attention concentration training program consisted of total 24 sessions and was intended to prove the effect by being carried out for 6 weeks. To research the change of learning attitude and mathematics academic achievement, I carried out learning attitude test and mathematics academic achievement test to both the experimental group and the control group both before and after attention concentration training program, checked the change rate, and proved the effect through repeated measures analysis of variance of results.
The conclusions of this study are as follows.
First, attention concentration training program was effective in improving the learning attitude and its lower elements―attitude for studying, classmates, and teacher―of attention deficit hyperactivity disordered children. Meaningful interaction effect between the groups and experimental period was seen, and the average score of the experimental group compared to the control group was improved meaningfully.
Second, attention concentration training program was effective in improving mathematics academic achievement of attention deficit hyperactivity disordered children. Meaningful interaction effect between the groups and experimental period was seen, and the average score of the experimental group compared to the control group was improved meaningfully, too.
As a result of this study, attention concentration training program was effective in improving both the learning attitude and mathematics academic achievement of attention deficit hyperactivity disordered children.
