This study was attempted in order to examine which effects the family resilience has on the parenting efficacy in fathers with the handicapped children, by applying the family resilience based on the strength perspective to fathers with the handicapped children. Also, among several variables in family resilience, it clarified which variable well explains the parenting efficacy in fathers with the handicapped children, thereby having increased the parenting participation of fathers with the handicapped children. And, the aim was to seek for a plan for intervention of the social work centering on strong points in managing healthy life of families with the handicapped children.
For this, the survey was conducted targeting 130 fathers who bring up children with autistic disorder, mental retardation, cerebral palsy, and physical disability. Regarding the research tools, in order to measure family resilience, it used the scale of family control, the scale of family attitude toward disability, the scale of family strengths, the scale of stability in role, the scale of family cohesion, the scale of family resources, and the scale of communication process. In order to measure the parenting efficacy in fathers with the handicapped children, the scale of parenting efficacy was used. The collected data was used SPSS 12.0 program. Frequency analysis, descriptive statistics, multiple regression analysis, and Hierarchical Multiple Regression Analysis were carried out.
As a result of researching, the relationship between the family resilience and the parenting efficacy in fathers with the handicapped children was indicated to have positive correlation with the parenting efficacy in all the fathers with the handicapped children in the correlation that 9 sub-factors in family resilience didn't consider influence of other variables. The factors of family resilience, which shows the highest correlation with the parenting efficacy in fathers with the handicapped children, were indicated to be the family control in faith system and the attitude toward disability, the family resources and family cohesion in organization type, and the problem solution in communication process. And, the clear communication in the communication process was indicated to have lower correlation with the parenting efficacy in fathers with the handicapped children compared to other factors for family resilience.
As a result of having examined the influence of 3 sub-factors in family resilience upon the parenting efficacy in fathers with the handicapped children, the relatively high explanatory adequacy was shown with 40.8% for faith system, 42.7% for organization type, and 28.8% for communication process. Thus, the family resilience can be known to be a very important factor on the parenting efficacy in fathers with the handicapped children. In particular, the family strength in faith system, the attitude toward disability, the family resources and family cohesion in organization type, the problem solution in the communication process, and the emotional response were indicated to have significant influence upon the parenting efficacy in fathers with the handicapped children.
Also, as a result of having analyzed the influence of the whole variables in family resilience upon the parenting efficacy in fathers with the handicapped children in a state of being mutually controlled the socio-demographic variables and the family-resilience sub-factors, the explanatory adequacy in socio-demographic variables showed 2%. On the contrary, the whole explanatory adequacy in family resilience, which added 9 sub-factors in family resilience, showed high explanatory adequacy with 48%. Thus, the family resilience could be known to be important factor that influences the parenting efficacy in fathers with the handicapped children. And, in the individual influence of sub-variables, among 9 sub-factors for monthly family income and the family resilience, the family resource in organization type was indicated to have influence upon the parenting efficacy in fathers with the handicapped children. Regarding this, unlike the results of having analyzed the influence of the sub-factors for family resilience upon the parenting efficacy in fathers with the handicapped children, the family strength in faith system and the problem-solving factor in communication were indicated to have no statistical significance. Given seeing the whole factors in family resilience, there is implication that the social and economic resources in a family can be a factor of increasing the parenting efficacy in fathers with the handicapped children more than other factors.
These findings showed that especially the family resilience in the family variable is a factor of having effect on the parenting efficacy in fathers with the handicapped children. Thus, the importance of family access could be confirmed. Rather than the intervention centering on the demerit perspective and problem, the intervention centering on family resilience, which is the center of family strength, could be known to be important for increasing parenting efficacy in fathers with the handicapped children. Therefore, when targeting the families with the handicapped children, especially targeting the fathers with the handicapped children in the practice of social welfare, the demerit perspective called stress is necessary for an effort for the intervention of the strength perspective called family resilience rather than intervention.
Also, the existing researches showed multi-dimensional aspect in a family by wholly collecting the partially family factors that have influence upon the parenting efficacy in fathers with the handicapped children. Thus, it is seen to have offered the basic data for clinical executors to develop a program or education targeting fathers with the handicapped children.
