Since the agreement of Korean-Chinese diplomatic association and open-door policy after 1990, the cultural exchange between the two countries has expanded to economic exchange. Moreover, Korea's abroad-studying policy has switched from 'sending abroad' to 'receiving from abroad', trying to build a superior high-school education system market and an Asian-education hub through the opening of education system market and internationalization. As the result of the two countries' increasing interchange and the policy of attracting foreign students, the number of Chinese students who come to Korea for studying has increased over the past several years.
This study has researched the level of Chinese students' ability to solve social problems and adapt to university life while studying in Korea. To investigate the relationship between the two factors, the questionnaire about social problem solving ability and adjusting to Korean university life was completed by 140 Chinese students, and the data of 116 students who sincerely participated the study was put to final analysis. The sub factors for social problem-solving ability were problem-orientation and problem-solving skill. The sub factors for adjusting to university life were academic-adaptation, social-adaptation, emotional-adaptation and university environment adaptation. The results of this study are the followings;
Firstly, in the aspect of social problem solving ability according to gender difference of the Chinese students, female students had higher social problem-solving ability compared to male students. This shows that female students are more capable of using better problem solving ability and skill in social circumstances.
Secondly, in the aspect of social problem solving ability according to academic years, there was a significant difference among the different years in all the sub factors of problem-orientation and problem-solving skill.
Thirdly, in the aspect of university life adaptation according to gender difference of the Chinese students, there was a minor difference between the male and female students. However, it was found that female students were better in academic adaptation, but this was not a notable difference.
Fourthly, in the aspect of academic-adaptation level and university environment adaptation level in university life adaptation according to academic years, fourth-graders were the highest and second-graders were the lowest. In emotional-adaptation, third-graders were the highest and second-graders were the lowest. In social-adaptation, fourth-graders were the highest and third-graders were the lowest.
Fifthly, in the aspect of university life adaptation according to academic years, there was no significant difference in emotional-adaptation. However, in academic-adaptation, there was a notable difference between second-graders and fourth-graders.
Sixthly, in order to research how problem-orientation of problem-solving ability affects the level of university adaption, the influence by problem-orientation on each sub factor was investigated. As a result, the ones with the high marks in problem-orientation were found to be capable of high social-adaptation and problem-orientation. Moreover, the ones with high problem-solving skills were found to be low at emotional-adaptation, while high at university environment adaptation.
As a result, it can be concluded that it is the social problem solving ability which directly corresponds to the treatment and solution of stress and conflicts which come from university life, thus enhancing university life adaptation.
However, this study has investigated the relationship between only the two factors of social problem solving ability and university life adaptation of the Chinese students studying in Korea. There may be other psychological factors which affect the Chinese students' university life adaptation. Therefore, various psychological factors other than social problem solving ability should be researched further in other studies in the future.
