This thesis commences with the viewpoint that the self-consciousness in the novel of ‘Oh, Jung-hee’ has much to do with ‘ontology’ of Martin Heidegger(1889-1976). The writer ‘Oh, Jung-hee’ has aversion about the woman who is seized with the feeling of oppression to the ruling power in her novel ‘The street of chinese’, ‘The yard of the childhood’.
Most of the novel written by the writer ‘Oh, Jung-hee’has treated the problems about the middle-aged woman who feels for pity about herself who hasn't lived her own life and has lost the possibilities she has wanted to have throughout her life and has cast many questions about her existence. The character in the novel comes to find a real life through many questions about herself who enjoys ordinary life. This resembles the notion of Martin Heidegger's(1889-1976) ‘present being’.
There are two main characters in the Oh's novels - The character who lives an extrinsic life and the character who lives an intrinsic life.
The first one is about the character who is aware of herself that is assimilated into her daily life and she realizes it but she doesn't live her own life and she comes to be frustrated. The character's busy daily lives that must take of her children who aren't hopeful meanings in her life and her husband who doesn't understand her lost potentiality make her live an extrinsic life. If we compare the life of women to that of the prisoner, the pregnance makes many women live untrue and makes them live like that of the animals.
In the life of trying to conceal oneself, the words shared with others aren't used to express someone's real feeling to other people but just to be exposed with the means of ‘monologue’-feeling just like that of earthquakes and destroying of the house but trying to stop it. She tries to keep her daily life by concealing herself in the invisible line.
The second one is about the character who tries to escape her daily life, realizing her destined life is just a fantasy that is concealed with the name of reality. When the character realizes this fact, she can escape from the orders which bind her and finally come to understand her true nature without the others' interference.
We call the first one 'extrinsic ego' who lives passively and dependently and the second one 'intrinsic ego' who lives actively and independently. The status of oneself or others' expectation can be the start to know oneself but can't be all to know about oneself. The writer 'Oh, Jung-hee' developed her story with a monologue of the character in her novels. The character in her novels is described as a person who devotes herself to the her own world and feels sorry for what she lost through her soliloquy.
Whether it is intrinsic or extrinsic in the character's life completely depends on her own choice. In that the writer 'Oh, Jung-hee' recognizes that the characters' daily lives in her novels going well with others makes one forget 'he or her intrinsic ego', I think the writer 'Oh, Jung-hee' aims the characters who are extrinsic.
The ordinary world is the fragmented world that is confined between the past and the future. The anxiety of the person who is confined the ordinary world makes her care about her own inner world which makes her try to listen to her intrinsic world. The anxiety makes her 'lost ego' return to her 'real ego' in the ordinary world. It makes her recover her memory of the past and her whole world - the real life, thinking of her coming death. The writer 'Oh, Jung-hee' pursuits the dual world- 'the ordinary world' which is subordinated to the customs and orders of her own world and 'extraordinary world' which isn't.
In conclusion, the truth that the writer tries to pursuit the strain between this two world is not the extrinsic ego but the process of trying to search for the life, as the life of intrinsic. The main subject of 'Oh's novels is that we should pursuit the essence in our lives and recover our 'intrinsic ego'.
I wrote this thesis on the purpose of seeking after the sense of writer through the existential access the question which the character 'I' in the novels brings into continuously, opposite to the studies on the writer 'Oh, Jung-hee', which has been done for ages about the point of view of the patriarchal orders and female life. In my opinion, the writer 'Oh, Jung-hee' has tried to convey the intrinsic self-reflection of existence and it is about the process of the seeking for the real self-consciousness, escaping from the false life which is related to the holism and ordinary world, from the birth to the death.
