The purpose of this research is to grasp the relationship between soldiers` social support, self-respect and their adaptability to the military service. This research investigated 400 soldiers from 1st August, 2008 to 30 August. For this research, I distributed and gathered questionnaire to the soldiers of the 1st Corps and several Divisions. I analyzed 388 questionnaires except 12 ones which are not answered honestly.
The main results of the research is as followings.
First, it does not reveal statistical significant difference in self-respect according to the characteristics of 'sociology of population'. Although it is not significant statistically, the soldiers who studied in the university has more self-respect than any other soldiers on the average.
Second, there is no statistical significant difference in social support such as scholarship, religion, rank, service branch, as well.
Third, it does not show statistical significant difference between soldiers` scholarship, rank and their adaptability according to the characteristics of 'sociology of population'. There is significant difference in the adaptability of the military service according to soldiers` religious activities at the level of p<.01, though. It means religious soldiers have more adaptable to the military service than atheistic ones. There is significant difference in the adaptability of the military service according to soldiers` branch of service at the level of p<.05. Through the significant difference, at the result of analysis, the soldiers in the branch of combat, administration, and engineering have more adaptable than the ones in the any other branches of service.
How about the relationships between soldiers` self-respect, social support and their adaptability to the military service?
The research reveals significant positive correlation at the level of p<.01 in the relationships between soldiers` self-respect, social support and their adaptability to the military service. The coefficient of correlation is .517 between self-respect and military service adaptability, and .582 between social support and military service adaptability. Thus, we can say that it is correlated more than .40
How soldiers` self-respect and social support effects their adaptability to the military service?
When evaluating the variables that can improve the adaptability, the Social support(β=.420) is the most effective to the adaptability, and the Self-respect(β=.238) is the second effective. As a result, the variables such as Social support and self-respect have more effective to the adaptability than the variables such as age, rank, religion, and scholarship. Through this research, the ways that can improve social support and self-respect in order to improve the adaptability must be presented.
The expansive meaning in the field of social-welfare is as followings, according to the result of the research.
According to the result of this research, the Self-respect and the Social support influences to the adaptability of military service significantly. Thus, we can confirm the variables such as the Self-respect and the Social support are important to the research concerning the adaptability of many young soldiers who perform a duty.
First, It is necessary to formulate a plan for improving soldiers` self-respect. It is necessary to develop a sustainable and effective program that every soldiers, from privates to sergeants who will be discharged, can participate. It is necessary to develop a system that the army can open the gate and cooperate with regional social welfare facilities considering the hierarchical particularities of the army organization.
Second, it is necessary to interfere in the circumstances of the army in order to improve soldiers` social support. To improve adaptability of the soldiers who step into the army, it is necessary to secure supporting system through dividing the role of soldiers` group and officers` systematically. It is also important to research and develop a program that the soldiers can experience brand-new supporting system in the new circumstances through the active interference of the religion facilities and chaplain.
Third, It is significant for all the soldiers to recognize that the self-respect and social support take an important part of the adaptability to the military service, and to research and develop a suitable program expansively.
Finally, the researcher of this thesis propose a follow-up research concerning developing the scale of the adaptability which is suitable to the young-age soldiers who have been grown up in the rapidly changing society. It is necessary to research the system of adaptation training in the army organization for the successful experience of the adaptability. It is necessary to research the program and the plan concerning total operation of the army organization for soldiers` self-respect and social support, as well.
