The purpose of this study was to compare and evaluate whether the external design of implants affect the stability and osteointegraion in immediate implantation and immediate loading.
Total 150 fixtures were placed following the standard protocol. Implants used were Astra type implants (Ø4.1mm×10mm, micro-threaded type, 50ea), Branemark type implants (Ø4.1mm×10mm, external hex, 50ea), and ITI type implants (Ø4.1mm×10mm, internal hex, solid abutment, 50ea). In 25 Mongrel dogs, mandibular premolars were extracted bilaterally, and implants were placed at the extracted wound sites. Animals were sacrificed at 1, 2, 4, 8, and 16 weeks after installation.
RFA (Ostell mentor) and PTV (Periotest) were measured at the time of insertion and sacrifice. Gross, radiologic, histologic, and histomorphometric examinations were done. BA (bone area) and BIC (bone to implant contact) were measured by KAPPA IMAGE BASE. ANOVA and Duncan multiple range tests were undertaken for statistical analysis (p<0.05).
All implants healed without inflammation in gross examination, however some radiolicency was found on the crestal bone. Three differently designed implants showed a little difference in the measured values during the early healing period. All implants showed reduced stability at 2 weeks.
RFA and RTV in ITI type implants were a little higher than in Astra type implants (p<0.05). BIC and BA in all implants showed increased value as time passes.
BA and BIC showed no statistical differences among three types of implants at 8 and 16 weeks (p<0.05).
There was a little difference in the measured data during the early period. But there was no significant difference among three types of implants at 8 and 16 weeks. It needs to be validated further with a larger number of specimens and improved measuring methods in the future studies.
