The purpose of this study is to detect the problems of the science curriculum in the special schools to suggest the essential datas for the teachers on the field and educational administrative staff to amend and improve the science curriculum of the special schools.
For this study, total 140 questionnaires has been handed out to science teachers of elementary 4th, 5th and 6th grades and junior and senior high school teachers from 18 special schools all over the country. Of all, 110 of them were collected back and 109 were analyzed except the one filled out not enough.
The followings are the facts that have been found through the processes.
First, when we looked into the special school science teachers considerations, most of them think of it positively though, because of lack of facilities and incomprehensive students, and lack of teaching capacity, they were dissatisfied in general.
To increase morale of the teachers, the supply of necessary facilities and materials should be supported in many ways and mixing with other classes should be avoided and science assistant for the sole classes should be provided for the optimum effectiveness.
Second, in the science curriculum and it's improvement survey, it turned out that the number of pure science-majored and science designated teachers were small which made it more difficult for the science education. Most of those curriculum used in science were common basic courses and basic educational courses. It turned out that individual capacity difference between the students was the main reason of science courses not getting up to the science educational objective.
The third, in the research of special school science course circumstances and improvements, it is true that the satisfaction from the textbooks is very low. Therefore, adjustment of the textbook to fit the students' level and development of the textbooks of different levels to accord with the different students levels and subsidiary study material supply are being strongly required.
For the effective science courses and teachings, the lab equipments and appliances were really necessary though, it turned out those necessary equipments are really insufficient so administrative and financial support have to be made.
Additionally, to meet the necessity of different level teachings, proper teachers and study materials should be obtained, a class' population should be curtailed, the level classes should be assorted regardless of the grades, teachers' training program should be prepared and science assistant teachers should be alloted. Because students capacity discrepancy was the biggest obstacle for the science curriculum, it is prerequisite to obtain the teachers and teaching materials along with different level classes.
Fourth, on the conditions and improvement of special school lab, half of the teachers answered "No Lab" and even of the schools possessing labs, only a few were having modernized labs. So, it turned out very poor overall. Also, they didn't have enough equipment which proves that most of the special school doesn't have enough equipment. The actual lab practice wasn't happeing in half of them because it was difficult for disabled students to experiment in the lab and facility wasn't enough.
This study is the only opinion of the teachers from the poll not all teachers. Besides, this couldn't research the actual teachers-learning circumstances and disabled students' cognizance of the science course.
Therefore, it is necessary to research and analyze what the practically needed science curriculums for the students and eventually apply the result to educations.
