This study has been conducted for the purpose of identifying if there are any differences in child development and maternal parenting characteristics such as parenting knowledge, parenting stress and self-efficacy depending on socio-demographical variables of infant, mother and society. Relevance between socio-demographical factors of infant, mother and society, maternal parenting characteristics and child development respectively by child's age (months) was also closely examined. Moreover, the present researcher tried to define how major variables affecting child development by age exercise relative influence on each other and to figure out whether maternal self-efficacy play a role as a mediator in socio-demographical variables of infant, mother and society, maternal knowledge and parenting stress exerting influence on child development.
Making the sample group, 252 infants between 15 to 36 months and their mothers has been selected from 15 day care centers in S City, 6 centers in A City and 6 in another S City of Gyeonggi-do, 2 centers in J Ward and one center in S Ward of Seoul. Questionnaires were distributed to mothers and nursing teachers of these day care centers, and tests were conducted afterwards. Collected data has been analyzed through frequency analysis, descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, multiple regression analysis and a series of regression analysis of Baron and Kenny presented (1986).
Results of this study can be summarized as follows.
Firstly, the parenting knowledge level of mothers was more or less high and their parenting stress was relatively low. Besides, their self-efficacy was high. Raw scores on child development for older babies were revealed higher since the mean of child development raw scores for 15 to 24 month-old infants was shown as 308.07 and 785.26 for 25 to 30 months and 1311.62 for 31 to 36 months.
Maternal parenting knowledge, parenting stress, self-efficacy and child development seemed to be similar regardless of the gender of a baby. Parenting knowledge did not show any difference depending on infants' age. However, parenting stress was shown differently by months of their babies. As to parenting stress due to difficult child and the dysfunctional interaction between parents and children, mothers with 31 to 36 month-old infants recognized higher stress than those with 15 to 24 months and 31 to 36 months. Infant age was not related to maternal self-efficacy. Parenting knowledge appeared not distinctively by the order of children's birth, but parenting stress and self-efficacy showed difference depending on the order. Mothers who have only one child recognized higher parenting stress due to difficult child characteristic than those who raise the second child or more. Self-efficacy was higher with mothers with their second child or more than mothers with their first child. Child development was also different depending on the order of children's birth. First children's development was higher than second ones.
Mothers' age did not show relations with parenting knowledge, parenting stress, self-efficacy and child development. As maternal parenting knowledge was different by the educational background, University graduated (or above) mothers showed higher level of parenting knowledge than high school graduates. On the other hand maternal parenting stress, self-efficacy and child development were not related to mothers' education. Maternal parenting knowledge, parenting stress, self-efficacy and child development did not show difference depending on monthly average of family incomes.
Relevance between parenting knowledge and parenting stress was examined by infant age. All the three age groups of 15 to 24months, 25 to 30months and 31 to 36 months showed the negative relations between parenting knowledge and parenting stress. However, the result was not statistically significant. Regarding the relation between parenting knowledge and self-efficacy by infant age, the three groups did not show association in general. As to the relationship between maternal parenting stress and self-efficacy, all groups showed the same result that more parenting stress mothers have got revealed less self-efficacy. Parenting knowledge was not related to child development for the group of 15 to 24 months -old infant, but infants of mothers who have the higher level of parenting knowledge showed higher development for the group of 25 to 30 months and 31 to 36months babies. Parenting stress did not show any relation to child development for the 15 to 24 months and 31 to 36 months infant groups, but more stress mothers has recognized showed lower level of child development for 25 to 30 months infants. Maternal self-efficacy was not associated with child development for 31 to 36 months infant group. However, relations were presented among sub-factors for the 15 to 24 months and 25 to 30 months groups. In the case of 15 to 24 months infant group, more self-efficacy on development support mothers have got showed higher level of social and emotional development of infants. In the 25 to 30 months group, more self-efficacy on communication skills mothers have their infants showed higher level of fine-motor skills and daily living skills development. Infants with mothers who have more self-efficacy on sound parenting ability showed high level of daily living development. Besides, infants with mothers who have more self-efficacy on development support showed high level of fine-motor skills and daily living development.
Relative influence of factors which predict child development by infant age was also tested. As to the 15 to 24 month-old infant group, it showed no variables affecting child development. For the 25 to 30 months group, maternal parenting knowledge on social development was proved to be the most influential factor on child development. The second major factor was maternal parenting stress due to dysfunctional interaction between parents and children. The third one was monthly average of family incomes. For the 31 to 36 month-old infant group, monthly average of family incomes was the most influential factor on child development and the second major one was maternal parenting knowledge on cognitive development.
Lastly, the mediating effects of self-efficacy were tested by infant age. Only the 25 to 30 month-old infant group showed mediating effects as significant results among sub-factors. When parenting stress due to difficult child and the dysfunctional interaction between parents and children has been exerting influence on infant's daily living development, self-efficacy was proved to play a meditating role in communication, sound parenting ability and development support.
