The purpose of this study is to investigate the influences of type and degree of family leisure by parents's 5 days working system on adolescent's perceived family strengths.
The subject of this study were 525 students who were selected at random from third grade of middle school in Daegu.
A questionnaire was used for the survey. Factor analysis and MANOVA were employed for the data analysis and Scheff? test for post-hoc analysis.
The main findings of this study were as follows:
First, there were significant differences in financial stability, family ties, communication and social ties of family strengths according to 5 days working system of parents. The adolescents whose parents were under 5 days working system had higher financial stability, family ties, communication and social ties than those whose parent were not under 5 days working system.
Second, there were not significant differences in adolescent's perceived family strengths by the type of family leisure.
Third, there were significant differences in adolescent's perceived family strengths by the degree of family leisure. The adolescents who had more family leisure had higher managemental functioning, financial stability, family ties, communication and social ties than the others.
Fourth, there ar significant differences in adolescent's perceived family strengths according to type of family leisure, degree of family leisure and parents's 5 days working system.
In addition, among the adolescents whose parents were under 5 days working system, the adolescents who have more family leisure had higher managemental functioning, financial stability, family ties, communication and social ties than the others. On the other hand, among the adolescents whose parents were under 5 days working system and who have less family leisure, adolescents of family-focused family leisure type showed higher than adolescents of physical-activity-focused and hobby-focused family leisure type on managemental functioning, financial stability, family ties, communication. And adolescents of hobby-focused family leisure type showed higher than adolescents of physical-activity-focused family leisure type on social ties.
Among the adolescents whose parents were not under 5 days working system, adolescents who have more family leisure had higher managemental functioning, financial stability, family ties, communication and social ties than the others.
As above results, even though family leisure is under the influences of the family's several conditions and environment, if family leisure increases due to the 5 working system of parents and children, family tie would be more strong, communication between family members would be improved, therefore eventually family strengths would be increased.
The results of the present study suggest that the degree of family leisure is more important rather than the type of family leisure for an improvement of family strength of adolescents.
