The present study examines the influence of working memory capacity, the breadth of attention, and the cognitive load on creativity in the view of associative theory. The study is largely divided into three parts.
The purpose of the study 1 is to compose the model of creative thinking in the view of associative theory through the previous theories and studies. This model posits that creative solutions occur when new associations are formed between disparate elements from memory. The breadth of attention is a positive function of the association, the working memory capacity is also a positive function but, cognitive load is an inverse function.
The purpose of the study 2 is to verify the relationship between the working memory capacity, the breadth of attention and creativity.
Multiple measures of each of these constructs were obtained from 124 elementary school students(second-grade students from two elementary school in metropolitan city of Daegu).
The results of the study 2 are as follows :
    1. Results of bivariate regression analysis demonstrates that the breath of attention has significant positive influence on the fluency, flexibility and the originality.
    2. Results of bivariate regression analysis demonstrates that the working memory capacity has significant positive influence on the fluency, flexibility and the originality.
    3. Structural equation modeling is then performed. As hypothesized, the findings of the study indicates the significant positive relationships between working memory capacity and breadth of attention on creativity. The interaction model that assumes the interaction between working memory capacity and the breadth of attention shows the better fit indices.
The purpose of the study 3 is to investigate the effects of the cognitive load on creativity, furthermore on the wide or narrow breadth of attention.
254 second-grade elementary school students from two school in metropolitan city of Daegu participate in this experiment. Students were assigned into two groups(High cognitive load group-130, Control group-124).
The results of the study 3 are as follows :
    1. Results of t-test demonstrates that the cognitive load has significant negative effects on the fluency, flexibility and the originality.
    2. Results of two-way ANOVA demonstrates that cognitive load impairs fluency, flexibility and originality more in participants whose trait breadth of attention is wide than in those whose trait breadth of attention is narrow.
